After Installing Windows 11 the First Hour Checklist
The install finished and the desktop looks bare - no Wi-Fi driver, giant icons, half the hardware asleep. That is not a failed install; it is an unfinished one. The first hour, spent in the right order, is what turns a fresh Windows into your Windows.

A clean install delivers Windows and little else - most drivers, updates and all of your apps still have to arrive. People judge a reinstall in this first hour, and most disappointments (no sound, wrong resolution, missing Wi-Fi) are simply updates that have not run yet. This checklist keeps the order strict: connect, update until there is nothing left, verify the hardware, and only then bring back apps and files. Deep optimisation and debloating are a separate, later topic - this hour is about a complete, healthy base.
The First Hour After a Clean Install
☑ Connect to Wi-Fi or LAN cable
☑ Windows Update - install, restart, repeat until up to date
☐ Device Manager - no yellow warning marks left
☐ Graphics and chipset drivers from the manufacturer site
☐ Browser, essentials installed - files copied back last
The first-hour checklist as a panel. The order matters more than the items: files and apps come back last, onto a finished system.
1
Connect and Run Windows Update Until It Gives Up
Connect to the internet - if Wi-Fi does not appear at all, plug in a LAN cable; the Wi-Fi driver itself often arrives through the first update round
Open Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates and install everything offered
Restart when asked, then check again. Updates arrive in rounds that unlock each other - two or three rounds is normal. Stop only when a check honestly reports You're up to date
Open Advanced options → Optional updates and install the driver updates listed there as well
2
Verify the Hardware in Device Manager
Right-click the Start button → Device Manager
Look for yellow warning marks or an Other devices section - each one is hardware still missing its driver
For anything left over, and always for the chipset and graphics, download drivers from the laptop or motherboard manufacturer's official support page for your exact model - these two matter more than any others for stability and performance
Check the display resolution is now your screen's native one, and test sound and Wi-Fi once - the three things the update rounds usually fix quietly
3
Check Activation While You Are in Settings
Open Settings → System → Activation and confirm it says Windows is activated with a digital licence. On a PC that ran activated Windows before, this usually settles itself within the first update rounds. If it still shows not activated after the PC has been online for a while, the activation guide in this series explains the edition-match rule and the troubleshooter route.
4
Bring Back Apps and Files - Last, Not First
Install your browser and sign in - bookmarks and passwords return by sync if you had it on
Install your essential apps fresh from their official sites; skip anything you did not actually use on the old system - a clean install is a rare free chance to leave junk behind
Copy your files back from the backup into Documents, Pictures and the Desktop
Create a restore point now, while the system is clean and working - search Create a restore point, open System Protection, and make one. Future-you will be grateful
🔴 Honest note: skip the driver updater programs that advertise in this moment. Windows Update plus your manufacturer's own support page cover every driver a normal PC needs; third-party driver tools are a classic source of wrong drivers and bundled junk on a system you just cleaned.

There is no Wi-Fi option at all after the install. Is something broken?
Almost never - the Wi-Fi driver simply has not arrived yet. Connect a LAN cable, run Windows Update rounds, and Wi-Fi normally appears. If it still does not, download the wireless driver for your exact laptop model from the manufacturer on another device and install it from a pen drive.
The screen resolution is low and everything looks stretched. Why?
The graphics driver is missing, so Windows is using its basic display driver. It is cosmetic and temporary - the proper driver arrives through Windows Update or from the graphics manufacturer's site, and the display snaps to native resolution immediately after.
Should I install my antivirus and apps before the updates finish?
Updates first. Installing software onto a system that is about to restart several times for updates invites half-finished installs. One hour of patience gives you a stable base; apps installed after stay installed cleanly.
