Make a Bootable Windows 11 Pen Drive with the Media Creation Tool
Every clean install starts here. Microsoft's Media Creation Tool downloads the current Windows 11 and writes it to a pen drive for you - no ISO hunting, no third-party sites, and a drive that passes Secure Boot on any modern PC.

There are several tools that can write a bootable USB, but only one is Microsoft's own. The Media Creation Tool fetches the latest Windows 11 build directly from Microsoft's servers and prepares the pen drive automatically, including splitting files correctly for UEFI systems - the detail that breaks most manual attempts. This guide uses the official route, states the real requirements honestly, and explains when the popular alternative, Rufus, actually makes sense.

The Media Creation Tool works in three quiet phases - download, verify, write. The progress panel above is an example; most of the waiting happens in the first phase.
1
What You Need - and the One Warning
A pen drive of 8 GB or more. Every file on it will be erased during creation - this is not a maybe, the tool formats the drive
A working Windows PC with an internet connection and roughly 10 GB of free space for the temporary download
Time: the Windows download is several gigabytes. On a fast connection the whole job takes about 15 minutes; on slow broadband, 40 minutes or more. Nobody can honestly promise you a fixed number here - your internet decides
2
Create the Drive, Step by Step
Open Microsoft's official Download Windows 11 page and, under Create Windows 11 Installation Media, click Download Now
Run the downloaded file and accept the licence terms
Choose Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD or ISO file) for another PC
Confirm the language and edition. Leaving Use the recommended options for this PC ticked is fine when the install is for a similar PC; untick it only if you need a different language
Choose USB flash drive, insert your pen drive, and select it carefully from the list - double-check the drive letter, because the next step wipes it
Wait for the download, verification and creation to finish, then click Finish and eject the drive properly
3
Check the Drive Before You Trust It
A bootable pen drive that fails halfway through an install is worse than none. Two quick checks:
Open the pen drive in File Explorer - you should see folders like boot, efi and sources, plus a setup.exe file. An empty or single-file drive means creation failed
The real test is booting: restart the target PC, open its boot menu, and confirm the pen drive appears as a UEFI: entry and starts Windows Setup. Do this test before the day you actually need the reinstall

Media Creation Tool or Rufus - the Honest Difference
Rufus is a respected free tool that writes a bootable drive from an ISO file you supply. Choose it when the Media Creation Tool keeps failing on your PC, or when you already have the official ISO downloaded. Use the Media Creation Tool when you want the simplest, vendor-supported path and a guaranteed-fresh build. Whichever you use, the rule that protects you is the same: the Windows image must come from Microsoft. Pre-modified ISOs from file-sharing sites can carry malware and are rejected by Secure Boot - saving ten minutes is not worth either risk.
🔴 Honest note: creating the pen drive does not touch the PC you create it on - nothing is installed or changed there. The erasing happens to the pen drive itself, and later to whichever PC you choose to install on. Keep those two facts separate and nobody loses data by surprise.

Can I use the same pen drive later for normal files?
Yes, but understand the order of events. While it holds the Windows installer it is a setup drive; when you no longer need it, format it and it becomes an ordinary pen drive again. Just remember that formatting - like creating it - erases everything on it.
The Media Creation Tool failed with an error code. What now?
Run it once more after restarting the PC, with antivirus paused and a different USB port - most failures are a disturbed download or a faulty pen drive. If it still fails, download the official ISO from the same Microsoft page and write it with Rufus instead.
Does the pen drive work for both Home and Pro editions?
Yes. The installer contains the editions and asks (or detects from your licence) which one to install. What matters is that at install time you pick the same edition your PC was previously activated with.
