✅ Activation Check

Is My Windows Permanently Activated - Or Will It Expire

A message says "Your Windows licence will expire soon", or you are buying a second-hand laptop and want proof it is genuinely activated. The slmgr commands answer it in seconds — including whether activation is permanent or temporary.

Not all activated Windows installs are equal. A genuine retail or OEM licence activates permanently, but some machines — especially cheap second-hand or shop-installed ones — were activated with temporary volume methods that expire after 180 days, which is why an "activated" PC can suddenly start showing expiry warnings months later. Settings only tells you "Windows is activated"; it does not tell you the kind or the expiry. The built-in licence tool slmgr does. Run these commands from Command Prompt as Administrator (right-click Start → Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin)). Note that slmgr shows its answers in a small pop-up dialog, not in the CMD window itself — wait a few seconds after pressing Enter for the dialog to appear.

The machine is permanently activated.

👆 The answer you want to see from slmgr /xpr — permanent activation, no expiry (dialog recreated with the real Windows wording)
1

Check the Activation Status and Expiry

  1. Type slmgr /xpr and press Enter
  2. A dialog appears. "The machine is permanently activated" means a genuine permanent licence — nothing to do
  3. If instead it shows an expiration date, the machine is on a temporary (volume/KMS-style) activation that will lapse on that date unless it is renewed by the organisation that issued it
2

See the Full Licence Details

  1. Type slmgr /dli and press Enter
  2. The dialog shows the Windows edition, the licence channel (for example Retail or OEM), the partial product key (last 5 characters only — the full key is never displayed), and the licence status
  3. The channel line is the quickest honesty check on a used laptop: Retail or OEM channels are normal for home machines; a Volume channel on a personal laptop deserves questions
3

Try Activating with the Installed Key

  1. If the PC has a genuine key installed but shows as not activated (common after a hardware change or reinstall), connect to the internet and type slmgr /ato
  2. Windows contacts Microsoft's activation servers and attempts activation with the key already on the machine
  3. Run slmgr /xpr again to confirm the result
4

Understand a Common Error — 0xC004F074 ⭐

  1. If activation attempts report error 0xC004F074, it means Windows tried to reach a KMS activation server and could not — typical on machines that were volume-activated and are now cut off from that organisation's network
  2. No command fixes that from your side: the permanent remedy is a genuine licence key of your own, entered in Settings → System → Activation → Change product key
  3. Once a genuine key is activated, slmgr /xpr will confirm permanent activation

Licence checks are a small but valuable part of the CMD toolkit — the full video covers the entire admin command collection, from repair to networking to user management.

⚠️ Honest and important: there is no legitimate command that activates Windows for free. slmgr only reports status and asks Microsoft's servers to activate a key you genuinely own. Websites selling ultra-cheap keys or "activator" tools are distributing unauthorised licences that can be revoked at any time — the /xpr check above exists precisely so you can verify what a machine really has before paying for it.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

The dialog says my activation will expire on a date. What happens after that?

Windows enters a notification state — it keeps working but shows activation warnings and some personalisation settings get locked. To fix it permanently, activate with a genuine licence key you own (Settings → System → Activation). Temporary activations only renew while connected to the issuing organisation's activation server.

Can slmgr show me my full Windows product key?

No — by design it only ever shows the last 5 characters of the key (in slmgr /dli). That is enough to match the key against a sticker or invoice without exposing the complete key on screen.

I replaced my motherboard and Windows deactivated. Will slmgr /ato fix it?

Often, yes — if your licence is a digital licence linked to your Microsoft account, sign in with that account and run the activation troubleshooter, or try slmgr /ato while online. OEM licences are tied to the original motherboard, so a board change can legitimately require a new licence; retail licences can usually be transferred.
