Endpoint Central Free Edition Limits 25 Endpoints and One Technician Explained

The free edition is genuinely useful — and genuinely capped. Here is exactly where the wall stands, what happens when you hit it, and how to plan around it honestly.

Many admins install Endpoint Central, love it during the trial, and then get surprised by the maths afterwards. So let us state the numbers plainly, from ManageEngine's own documentation. The Free Edition includes all features — this is not a crippled demo. The limits are about scale and people: up to 25 endpoints in total, and one admin user (technician). Everything on this page follows from those two numbers.

The wall is real — the console tells you exactly when you have reached it

What the 25 Endpoint Limit Really Counts

  1. The 25 is a combined total. Servers do not get a separate free pool — you can manage any number of servers only as long as the total endpoints stay within 25
  2. Every computer with an active agent counts, including test machines and that forgotten laptop in the store room. Uninstall agents from dead machines to free their slots
  3. Per ManageEngine's FAQ, new agents added after the limit is reached will not operate. The 26th install does not break the other 25 — it simply does not join

What One Technician Means in Daily Life

  1. Only one admin user can be created. In practice, the whole IT team shares that one login, or one person owns the console
  2. That also means no individual accountability — the audit trail shows the account, not the human. For a one-person IT setup this is fine. For a team, it is usually the limit that bites before the endpoint count does
  3. Extra technician logins are a paid item — you cannot add a user past the limit without buying technician licences
3

The Trial to Free Edition Path

  1. The download starts as a 30-day trial with the full feature set, so evaluate with your real machines and real patch cycles, not a toy lab
  2. When the trial ends, the product automatically moves to the Free Edition — the transition is seamless, with no loss of data or configurations for the endpoints you keep
  3. If 30 days was not enough to evaluate, ManageEngine can issue a temporary licence on request through sales — ask before the trial expires, not after
4

Planning Honestly Around the Limit ⭐

  1. 25 or fewer devices, one IT person? Stay free without guilt — you get the complete feature set, which is unusually generous
  2. Growing past 25? Paid plans start at 50 endpoints. Budget for the next slab before the rollout, not after the 26th user starts asking why their PC is unmanaged
  3. More than one admin? Price the technician licences with the endpoints — shared single logins are a security and audit compromise, not a saving
  4. Keep the console tidy either way: remove decommissioned machines promptly, because stale agents eat the very slots you are short of
⚠️ The trap to avoid: rolling the agent out to the entire office during the 30-day trial and discovering the 25 limit afterwards. Your trial should test the product, not quietly onboard the whole fleet past your licence.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Does the free edition remove features like patch management or remote control?

No. ManageEngine states the Free Edition supports all features. The restriction is capacity — 25 endpoints and one admin user — not functionality. Feature differences exist between the paid editions, not between free and paid at this level.

What exactly happens when I install the 26th agent on the free edition?

Nothing breaks. The existing 25 keep working, and the new agent beyond the licence limit does not operate. To bring it under management you either free a slot by removing a retired machine or move to a paid plan, which starts at 50 endpoints.

Can servers and workstations mix inside the 25?

Yes. Servers count inside the same total of 25 endpoints; there is no separate free server allowance. One note from the licensing rules: workstations can consume spare server licences in paid setups, but a server can never use a workstation licence.
