Ninite Honest Limits Fixed App List Latest Version Only and No Scheduling

Ninite deserves its popularity - and it also deserves an honest list of what it cannot do, so you do not discover the limits in the middle of an office rollout.

Ninite's promise is narrow and it keeps it perfectly: pick from its list, run one file, get clean silent installs. Trouble starts when people expect it to behave like a management platform. This page walks through the four real limits - the fixed catalogue, latest-version-only installs, the internet requirement, and no scheduling in the free version - plus the point where Ninite Pro or a different tool becomes the honest answer.

Ninite - What the Free Version Does and Does Not Do
Installs and updates its listed apps silentlyYes
Installs your own MSI or company softwareNo - fixed list only
Lets you choose an older app versionNo - latest only
Scheduled automatic updatesPro version only
Works fully offlineNo - downloads live
None of these are hidden - they are simply the price of a two-minute tool
1

Limit One - The Catalogue Is Fixed

  1. Ninite offers a curated list of popular free apps - browsers, media players, utilities, runtimes, LibreOffice and similar standards
  2. If your accounts package, your printer's full suite or an industry tool is not on the list, Ninite cannot help with it at all
  3. There is no "add my own installer" option in the free version - the file you download only ever contains your ticked choices from their list

Practical pattern: let Ninite do the standard 80 percent, and install the specialist software separately - by hand, by winget script, or by a deployment tool.

2

Limit Two - Latest Version Only, and Internet Required

  1. A Ninite installer always fetches the newest version of each app at the moment it runs - an installer saved last year installs this year's versions
  2. That is wonderful for security and terrible if one app version must stay frozen for compatibility - Ninite gives you no version choice
  3. It also means the installer needs a live internet connection; it is a downloader, not an offline package (offline frozen installers are a Ninite Pro feature)
3

Limit Three - No Scheduling and No Uninstall in the Free Version

  1. The free installer runs when you run it. Keeping apps updated means remembering to run it again
  2. A workable home workaround is Windows Task Scheduler running your saved Ninite file weekly - it works, but it is your own arrangement, not a Ninite feature, and it needs the PC on and a user context that can run it
  3. Ninite also does not uninstall apps - removal is still a normal Windows job
  4. Central scheduling, automatic update policies, remote machines and reporting live in Ninite Pro, which is a paid per-machine product
4

So When Is Ninite Still the Right Choice ⭐

  1. Setting up any single PC - family, your own new laptop, a fresh Windows install: nothing is faster
  2. A standard app set that matches its list - if your ten apps are all there, the limits never touch you
  3. Monthly maintenance on a home PC - one saved file, one double-click, everything updated

Move on when you need your own software in the bundle, pinned versions, offline installs, scheduling across machines or reports - that is winget scripting and Endpoint Central territory, and the video shows exactly where the handover happens.

⚠️ Honest framing: these are design limits, not defects. Ninite trades control for simplicity on purpose. The mistake is not using Ninite - it is expecting a two-minute home tool to run an office.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add an app that is not on the Ninite website?

No. The catalogue is curated by Ninite and the free installer can only contain apps from that list. For anything else, use the publisher's installer, a winget command, or a deployment package.

Why did my old saved Ninite installer install newer app versions?

That is by design. The installer asks Ninite's servers for the current configuration each run, so it always installs the latest versions and skips apps that are already up to date.

Is Ninite Pro worth it for a small office?

If you only need installs on setup day, the free version plus a winget script is enough. Pro earns its price when you want central scheduling, update policies and visibility across many machines without building your own system.
