Install Ventoy on an External Hard Disk or SSD Safely
A 64 GB pen drive fills up fast when a single Windows ISO eats 6 GB. An external hard disk or SSD gives Ventoy room for a whole library - every Windows version, every rescue tool, plus your normal files. It works exactly like a pen drive, with one serious warning you must read before clicking anything.

The complete guide video shows Ventoy being prepared and booted - the same workflow powers a big external drive
Ventoy does not care whether the "USB drive" is a pen drive, an external hard disk or an SSD in a USB enclosure - if it connects over USB and the PC can boot from it, Ventoy runs. A big drive is honestly the best Ventoy home: dozens of ISOs, your portable tools, and ordinary file storage side by side, at SSD speeds. But installing on a hard disk raises the stakes of the one rule that is merely annoying on an empty pen drive: Ventoy's Install repartitions the entire disk.
The one big warning: clicking Install in Ventoy2Disk erases every partition and every file on the selected disk - the whole disk, not one partition. On a pen drive that costs you nothing. On your 1 TB backup drive it costs you everything on it. Back the disk up somewhere else, and check the device name and size three times before installing.
Ventoy2Disk device list - pick by name AND size, every time
SanDisk USB 3.058.6 GB - the pen drive
WD My Passport931.5 GB - the external HDD
Samsung SSD Enclosure465.7 GB - the external SSD
Most wrong-disk accidents happen in this dropdown - match the exact model and capacity of the drive you intend to convert
1
Prepare the Disk - Backup and Visibility
Copy everything you need from the external disk to another location - after Install there is no undo
Plug the disk directly into a PC USB port, not through an unpowered hub
Run Ventoy2Disk.exe as administrator and open the Device dropdown
If the HDD/SSD does not appear, open Option and enable Show All Devices (present in newer Ventoy2Disk versions) - Windows classifies many USB hard disks differently from pen drives, and this setting reveals them
2
Choose Partition Style, Then Install Once
Under Option - Partition Style, choose GPT for a modern UEFI-only workflow and for disks over 2 TB (MBR cannot use space beyond 2 TB); choose MBR only if you must boot very old BIOS-only PCs
Optional: under Option - Partition Configuration you can reserve space at the end of the disk for an extra partition of your own
Select the correct device - check the size one last time - and click Install
Confirm both warnings. Ventoy creates the big data partition plus the 32 MB VTOYEFI boot partition and finishes in under a minute
3
Use the Big Drive Properly Afterwards
Copy ISOs to the data partition exactly like a pen drive - folders are fine, Ventoy scans them
Normal files can live on the same partition: documents, drivers, portable apps. Ventoy's menu only lists bootable image files and ignores everything else
The drive still works as ordinary storage on any PC - Ventoy changes nothing about daily file use
Always eject safely; a hard disk in mid-write is even less forgiving than a pen drive

Speed and Behaviour - What to Expect
On an SSD, the Ventoy menu and ISO loading feel instant; Windows setup from an SSD-based Ventoy is noticeably faster than from a pen drive
An old USB 2.0 enclosure or a spinning disk still works - installs simply take longer; the bottleneck is the enclosure and port, not Ventoy
Booting behaviour, Secure Boot enrolment and updates are identical to a pen drive: Update for new Ventoy versions, never Install again
One PC at a time, as with any boot disk - the drive can serve every PC you own, just not simultaneously

Will installing Ventoy on my external hard disk delete only one partition?
No. Install rebuilds the disk's partition table completely - every partition on that physical disk is erased. This is exactly why the backup and the device check in Step 1 are non-negotiable.
Can I keep a separate personal partition next to Ventoy on the same disk?
Yes, in two ways: Ventoy's data partition already holds normal files alongside ISOs, and the Partition Configuration option at install time can reserve space at the end of the disk for an additional partition of your own. Note that reserved space must be chosen during Install, not added later.
My external SSD is fast, but will old PCs boot from it?
The PC boots the SSD the same way it boots any USB device. Very old BIOS-only machines need the MBR partition style and sometimes a USB 2.0 port; modern UEFI machines take the GPT style without complaint.
