Back Up Everything Before Installing Windows 11 in the Right Order

A clean install does not ask twice. The partition you select is erased completely, and the files people lose are rarely exotic - photos, documents, saved passwords and one software licence nobody wrote down. This is the backup order that covers them.

Backup advice fails when it is just a list. Order matters because some things cannot be recovered once setup starts - the licence key inside a running program, the passwords inside a browser, the drivers inside the current Windows. Work through this page top to bottom and each item is captured while it still exists.

Backup Order - Do Not Skip Steps
① Personal files - Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Downloads
② Browser passwords and bookmarks - export or sync
③ Licence keys - Windows, Office, paid software
④ Driver export - before the old Windows is gone
⑤ Verify - open files from the backup copy itself
The safe order. The verify step at the end is the one most people skip - and the one that decides whether the backup is real.

Step 1 - Personal Files to Another Device

Copy means another physical device - an external drive or another PC. A second folder on the same disk is not a backup against an install.

  1. Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos and Downloads - the five folders that hold almost everything
  2. Check inside app folders too - accounting data, for example Tally data folders, often lives outside Documents
  3. Include the files sitting on other drives only if setup will touch those drives - when unsure, back them up anyway
  4. Compare folder sizes after copying. A copy that stopped halfway looks finished but is not

Step 2 - Browser Data and Passwords

The most common post-install panic is not lost documents - it is a browser full of saved logins that nobody remembers.

  1. Sign in to your browser sync, or export passwords and bookmarks to a file stored with the backup
  2. Note two-factor apps - an authenticator on the PC or phone may need re-pairing after install
  3. Save any wallet, banking or office logins you only ever auto-filled - you will be asked for them fresh

Step 3 - Licence Keys While the Old Windows Still Runs

After a clean install, the programs that knew your keys are gone. Extract the information first.

  1. Windows itself usually reactivates automatically on the same hardware - confirm Settings shows Activated before you begin
  2. Microsoft Office - check the account it is linked to at account.microsoft.com, since most modern copies are account-based
  3. Paid tools like printer software, accounting packages or antivirus - note the key, the registered email, or both
  4. Export your current drivers as insurance - in the running Windows, an admin Command Prompt with dism /online /export-driver /destination:E:\DriversBackup saves every third-party driver to the backup drive

Step 4 - Verify the Backup, Then Install

A backup you have never opened is a hope, not a backup.

  1. Open a few photos and documents directly from the backup copy
  2. Confirm the backup drive is disconnected or safely removed before setup starts, so it can never be selected by mistake
  3. Only now boot the installer and choose your partition with a clear head
🔴 An upgrade install keeps your files - and people still lose them. Upgrades fail, power cuts happen, wrong partitions get clicked. The backup is not about doubting the upgrade; it is about making every outcome recoverable.

❓ Common Questions (FAQ)

Is copying to the D drive enough?

Only if setup will definitely not touch that drive - and mistakes happen at the partition screen. An external device you unplug before installing is the only copy that cannot be erased by a wrong click.

How big should the backup drive be?

Bigger than the data you are copying. Add up Documents, Pictures, Desktop and Downloads in Properties - the backup drive needs that much free space plus a margin.

What about OneDrive or Google Drive copies?

Cloud copies are real backups if sync finished before the install. Open the cloud in a browser and confirm your newest files are actually there - a paused sync protects nothing.
