Install Windows 11 with Rufus and Ventoy Complete Guide for Both Methods

Two free tools, one job - a bootable Windows 11 USB. Rufus writes one ISO into one dedicated installer. Ventoy turns one pendrive into a library that boots many ISOs. This guide covers both methods completely, in the right order, with the settings that actually matter.

Every Windows 11 installation follows the same chain - genuine ISO, correct USB, correct boot, careful setup screens. Break any one link and the install fails halfway. Below, Method 1 uses Rufus and Method 2 uses Ventoy. Both are free, both work - they suit different jobs. Read the preparation first, pick your method, then follow the shared setup screens at the end.

✅ One Ventoy install, many ISO files - adding a new installer is just a copy paste
A Ventoy pendrive is a normal-looking drive. You copy ISO files onto it like regular files and Ventoy shows them in a boot menu.
1

Prepare First - ISO, Pendrive and Backup

Ninety percent of failed installs are decided before setup even starts. Get these three things right.

  1. Download the Windows 11 ISO only from Microsoft - the official download page gives the genuine file, free
  2. Use a pendrive of 8 GB or more. Everything on it will be erased by both tools, so copy your files off first
  3. Back up the target PC before a clean install - documents, photos, browser data and licence keys
  4. Keep the laptop on charge. A battery dying mid-install can corrupt the whole setup
2

Method 1 - Make the Installer with Rufus

Rufus is a small free tool from rufus.ie. It writes one ISO into one dedicated bootable USB - the simplest route for a single install.

  1. Open Rufus and confirm the Device line shows your pendrive - not an external hard disk
  2. Click SELECT and choose the Windows 11 ISO you downloaded
  3. Set Partition scheme to GPT and Target system to UEFI (non CSM) for any modern PC
  4. Click START. Rufus may show a Windows User Experience box with customisation options - choose what you need and confirm
  5. Rufus warns that all data on the device will be destroyed. Confirm only when the right device is selected
  6. Wait for the status to show READY, then close Rufus and eject the pendrive

The result is a single-purpose USB - it boots straight into Windows 11 setup and nothing else.

3

Method 2 - Make the Installer with Ventoy

Ventoy works the opposite way. You install Ventoy onto the pendrive once, and afterwards you simply copy ISO files onto it like normal files.

  1. Download Ventoy from its official site ventoy.net and extract the zip
  2. Run Ventoy2Disk, select your pendrive and click Install - this is the step that erases the drive
  3. Wait for the success message. The pendrive now has a Ventoy partition you can open in File Explorer
  4. Copy the Windows 11 ISO file onto the pendrive. No extraction, no special tool - a plain copy
  5. Add more ISOs if you like - Windows 10, a WinPE toolkit, Linux - each one appears in the boot menu
  6. Eject the pendrive properly so the large ISO copy is fully written

To change the installers later, just delete or add ISO files. You never rebuild the pendrive.

4

Boot the PC From the USB

The installer only starts if the PC boots from the pendrive instead of its own disk.

  1. Insert the pendrive, restart the PC and tap the boot menu key for your brand - F12 on most Dell and Lenovo, F9 on HP, Esc or F8 on many ASUS boards
  2. Choose the UEFI entry for your USB drive in the one-time boot menu
  3. Rufus USB boots directly into Windows Setup. Ventoy first shows its menu - select the Windows 11 ISO and press Enter
  4. If the PC boots into the old Windows instead, the key was pressed too late - restart and tap it from the first second
5

The Setup Screens That Matter

Most setup screens are safe defaults. These are the ones where a wrong click costs data or a wrong edition.

  1. Language and keyboard - pick your region so the keyboard layout stays correct
  2. Click Install now. If setup asks for a product key, a digital licence usually activates automatically after install - you can choose I don't have a product key and continue
  3. Edition - choose the same edition your licence covers, normally Windows 11 Home or Pro. A wrong edition will not activate
  4. Choose Custom install for a clean install. This is the screen where partitions are chosen - deleting a partition here erases its data permanently
  5. Select the unallocated space or the intended system partition and click Next - setup creates what it needs
6

The First Hour After Installation

Setup finishing is the halfway mark. This hour decides whether the PC runs well or returns with problems.

  1. Connect to the internet and run Windows Update fully - repeat until it reports no more updates
  2. Open Settings and check Activation shows Windows is activated
  3. For missing devices like audio or Wi-Fi, install the driver from your laptop or motherboard maker's official page
  4. Install your everyday software last, after updates and drivers are stable
🔴 Both tools erase the pendrive completely. Rufus warns you on screen; Ventoy's Install button does the same job. Whatever was on that USB is gone in both methods - back it up first, and double-check the device name before you confirm.

❓ Common Questions (FAQ)

Which is better for one home PC, Rufus or Ventoy?

For a single install on one PC, Rufus is the simpler choice - one ISO, one USB, done. Ventoy earns its place when you install often or want several ISOs on one pendrive.

Will installing Windows 11 delete my files?

A clean install with Custom setup deletes the partition you choose - that is permanent. An upgrade install keeps files, but a verified backup is still the safe order before any install.

Do I need a product key during setup?

Most PCs with a genuine Windows 10 or 11 licence activate automatically once online, because the licence is digital and tied to the hardware. You can skip the key screen during setup and check activation afterwards in Settings.
