Windows Setup Partition Screen Delete or Keep Explained Honestly
One screen in Windows setup causes more data loss than every other screen combined - the list of partitions with a Delete button. This page explains what each partition is, what deleting really does, and how to choose with confidence instead of hope.

At the partition screen, setup asks where Windows should live. The honest facts first - deleting a partition erases everything on it, permanently. Formatting does the same to a partition's data. And choosing the wrong old partition can wipe the drive holding your photos while Windows installs happily beside it. Slow down here. This screen rewards thirty careful seconds.
Windows Setup - Where Do You Want to Install
Drive 0 Partition 1 - EFI System100 MB
Drive 0 Partition 2 - MSR Reserved16 MB
Drive 0 Partition 3 - PrimaryWindows
Drive 0 Partition 4 - Recovery600 MB
Drive 1 Partition 1 - PrimaryDATA - do not touch
A typical two-drive layout as an example. The small partitions belong to the old Windows. Drive 1 in this example is a data drive - setup must not touch it.

The Two Doors - Upgrade and Custom
Before the partition screen, setup offers two install types. They are not two speeds of the same thing.
Upgrade - keeps your files, apps and settings, and replaces Windows underneath. Only offered when setup is started from inside a running Windows of the same architecture and language
Custom - a clean install. You choose a partition, and whatever that partition held is replaced
Booting from USB and choosing Custom is the clean-install path this channel's method uses
If keeping data is the plan, Upgrade or a keep-my-files option must be chosen deliberately - Custom never preserves apps

What the Small Partitions Are
A modern Windows disk has helpers around the main partition. Recognising them stops panic deletions.
EFI System Partition - the small boot partition UEFI starts from. Around 100 MB
MSR - a reserved Microsoft partition with no drive letter. Around 16 MB
Recovery - holds the Windows recovery environment used for resets and repair. A few hundred MB
Primary - the big one. This is where Windows, programs and usually your files live
On a true clean install of a single-disk PC, deleting all of Drive 0's partitions and installing to the unallocated space is the standard route - setup recreates the helpers automatically
3
Delete, Format or Just Select - the Real Difference
The three verbs look similar and behave very differently.
Select a partition and click Next - setup installs over it; a clean setup may move old files to a Windows.old folder only in upgrade-style flows, never count on it in Custom
Format - erases that partition's data and prepares it empty. Everything on that partition is gone
Delete - removes the partition itself, turning its space unallocated. Its data is gone with it
Extend and New - for building partitions manually from unallocated space, usually unnecessary when installing to a whole disk
4
The Discipline That Prevents Disasters
Technicians do not have better luck at this screen. They have a routine.
Identify drives by size, not by order - Drive 0 is not always the disk you think it is
If a second drive holds data you must keep, the safest move is to shut down and physically disconnect it before installing
Never delete partitions on a drive you have not backed up and identified
When unsure, stop. Setup can be cancelled safely before you click Next on a partition - nothing has changed yet
🔴 There is no undo on this screen. A deleted partition's files do not go to a recycle bin. If you cannot say out loud which physical disk each Drive entry is, you are not ready to click Delete.

Both methods live on screen - making the USB with Rufus, making it with Ventoy, booting and installing Windows 11 step by step.
Disk space that belongs to no partition. When you delete all partitions on a disk, it becomes one block of unallocated space, and installing Windows there lets setup create the correct partition layout by itself.
Can I keep my D drive data while clean installing on C?
Yes, when C and D are separate partitions or drives and you only touch the Windows partition. Identify them by size first - and keep the backup anyway, because one wrong click is all it takes.
Setup says Windows cannot be installed to this disk - why?
Usually a partition-style mismatch - the PC booted in Legacy mode but the disk is GPT, or the reverse. Boot the USB in UEFI mode for GPT disks. A dedicated guide on this channel covers the GPT and MBR error in full.
