⚙️ Installer Problem Fix

Why Does the MediCat Installer Close as Soon as I Open It

You double-click the installer batch file, a black window flashes for half a second — and nothing. No error, no install. This is one of the most common MediCat problems, and it is almost never a broken download. Here are the real causes, in order.

The MediCat installer is a batch (.bat) script, not a normal setup program. It needs its files beside it, administrator rights, and an antivirus that is not killing it mid-run. When any of those is missing, the window simply closes — often before you can read the error. Work through the fixes below one by one; the first one solves it for most people.

Windows protected your PC✕
Microsoft Defender SmartScreen prevented an unrecognized app from starting. Running this app might put your PC at risk.

One 'instant close' is actually this SmartScreen block. For the official installer only: More info → Run anyway. On any file from another source, take the warning seriously.

You Are Running It from Inside the Zip — Extract First

This is the number one cause. If you open the downloaded archive and double-click the installer inside the archive window, Windows runs it from a temporary location where the toolkit files are not present — the script finds nothing and exits instantly.

  1. Close the archive window completely.
  2. Right-click the downloaded archive → Extract All (or use 7-Zip → Extract to a folder). Extract to a simple location like the Desktop.
  3. Open the extracted folder — you should see the installer file together with the other MediCat folders and files.
  4. Run the installer from there. It can now read the files sitting next to it.
2

Run It as Administrator — Formatting Needs Full Rights

The installer formats a drive and writes a bootloader. A normal double-click does not give it those rights, so it can fail at the first command and close.

  1. In the extracted folder, right-click the installer batch file.
  2. Choose Run as administrator and approve the Windows prompt.
  3. The window should now stay open and ask you for the USB drive letter — that prompt is the sign the script is actually running.
3

Unblock the File and Get It Out of Protected Folders

Windows quietly restricts files that arrived from the internet, and some folders fight back too:

  1. Right-click the installer file → Properties. If you see an Unblock checkbox at the bottom of the General tab, tick it and click OK. (If there is no checkbox, the file is already unblocked — move on.)
  2. Make sure the extracted folder is not inside a synced or protected location. Desktop or a plain folder like C:\Medicat works best; deep inside OneDrive folders the sync tool can lock files while the script is copying.
  3. Keep the folder path simple — very long paths and special characters in folder names occasionally trip up batch scripts.

Antivirus or SmartScreen Is Silently Killing It

If the window still closes, something is stopping the script while it runs:

  1. Pause real-time antivirus protection before running the installer, and only for the duration of the install. Antivirus programs frequently block or quarantine parts of repair toolkits (password and network tools are flagged by design of their detection rules), and a script whose files vanish mid-run just dies.
  2. If Windows shows a blue "Windows protected your PC" SmartScreen box instead, click More info → Run anyway. This appears for many legitimate unsigned scripts; still, only do this for the installer you downloaded from the official MediCat website.
  3. To see the actual error, open the folder, click in the File Explorer address bar, type cmd and press Enter, then drag the installer file into the black window and press Enter. Run from a console like this, the window cannot close — you can read exactly which line failed.

Still Closing? Re-extract a Fresh Copy

If none of the above helps, the extraction itself may be incomplete — one corrupt part in a split archive can leave the installer without a file it needs:

  1. Delete the extracted folder.
  2. Re-extract from the original archive with 7-Zip and watch for any error message during extraction. Any CRC or "data error" message means a download part is damaged — re-download that part only.
  3. Run the fresh installer as administrator, with antivirus paused.

Compare your screens with the video above — it shows the extracted folder's contents and the installer window staying open and asking for the drive letter. If your folder contents look different, your extraction is the problem.

🔴 Do not download a "fixed installer" from forums or video descriptions of other channels. A batch file can run any command on your PC. If your official installer fails, the cause is one of the five things above — never a reason to trust a stranger's script.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why does a .bat file close instantly with no error?

Batch scripts close their window the moment they finish or hit a fatal problem. Running the file from inside a console window (open cmd in the folder, then run the file there) keeps the text on screen so you can read the real error.

Is it safe to click 'Run anyway' on the SmartScreen warning?

Only for the installer you personally downloaded from the official MediCat website. SmartScreen warns about unsigned files, which includes many genuine tools — but the same warning on a file from any other source should be taken seriously.

The installer asks for a drive letter and then closes. What now?

That usually means the letter you typed does not match a removable drive, or the drive was disconnected. Reconnect the USB, note its exact letter in File Explorer, disconnect other external drives, and run the installer again as administrator.
