Keep Your Phone Alive as a Full Time Modem Heat Battery and Charging Care
The setup works — and three months later the phone's battery is swollen and it shuts down at random. Tethering around the clock is one of the hardest jobs a phone can do. This page is how to run one without killing it.

🎥 The complete phone-to-router tethering setup, shown step by step in the video
A modem phone works under a triple load: the mobile radio transmitting continuously, the tethering stack routing for a whole network, and the charger pushing power in the entire time. Heat is the product of all three, and heat is what ages lithium batteries. A phone on hotspot duty on a sunny desk can spend its life hotter than its designers ever intended. None of this is a reason to avoid the setup — offices run modem phones for years — but the care below is the difference between a tool and a consumable.
Full Time Modem Duty — The Care Checklist
✔ Phone fixed in one ventilated spot — never under papers, never in a drawer
✔ Battery charge limit ON where the phone offers it (or smart plug schedule)
✔ Original or quality charger — cheap adapters run hot and age everything
✔ Weekly glance: battery health percentage and any swelling — a bulging battery is a retirement notice
Five habits that decide a modem phone's lifespan — none of them cost money.
1
Heat — the Main Enemy, Managed First
Stand the phone upright in open air, out of direct sunlight; a small stand that lets air pass behind it is ideal
Take the case off if the phone runs hot — pretty cases are insulation
Never let it live under papers, inside a drawer, or on top of the warm router; stacked heat sources age everything
If the phone has a battery temperature or device-care warning, treat it as information, not noise — move the phone, improve the signal spot (a phone straining for signal transmits harder and heats more)
2
Charging Discipline for a Phone That Never Unplugs
Batteries age fastest held at 100% in heat. Modern phones increasingly offer the antidote:
Charge-limit / battery-protect mode — many Android phones can cap charging at 80–85%, and recent iPhones offer a limit option. For a phone that lives on the charger, turn it on; the lost capacity is irrelevant, the lifespan gain is real
No charge limit available? A smart plug on a schedule (charge a few hours, rest a few hours) is a crude but effective substitute
Use a modest charger — the job needs a trickle, not 100-watt fast charging; a basic quality adapter runs cooler
Keep the cable decent — a frayed cable makes intermittent tethering drops that look like network faults
3
Software Settings for Modem Duty
Turn the phone's own Wi-Fi hotspot off — USB tethering only; the hotspot radio is pure extra heat and drain
Set the screen to the shortest timeout and leave it face-down or dark — the screen is a top power consumer
Remove or disable heavy personal apps; a modem phone should be boring — no games, no social feeds syncing all day
Keep system updates on, applied at a chosen hour — an update reboot at billing time is a self-inflicted outage
Confirm tethering restarts automatically after a reboot; if it does not, that behaviour goes on the office instruction card
4
Know When the Phone Is Done
Retire the phone from modem duty when the battery health reading is badly degraded, the back panel lifts or the battery visibly swells, or shutdowns begin under load. A swollen battery is a safety issue, not just a reliability one — stop using it and replace it through a proper channel. The good news: modem duty does not need a good phone. A modest, dedicated handset with a clean battery and a charge-limit feature is the ideal recruit — save the flagship for your pocket.
🔴 Safety line: a bulging or very hot battery is never "monitor and continue". Power it down, unplug it, and replace it. No network uptime is worth a battery fire.

Will 24x7 tethering definitely destroy the battery?
It ages the battery faster than normal use — that part is physics, mainly through heat and time spent at full charge. With ventilation and a charge limit, a modem phone commonly serves for years. Without any care, the same phone can be visibly degraded within months.
Should I remove the battery and run on charger power only?
Almost no modern phone allows battery removal, and most will not run stably without a battery even if opened. Do not attempt it. Charge limits, ventilation and a modest charger achieve most of the benefit safely.
Which phone makes the best dedicated modem?
A modest one: reliable 4G/5G radio, a battery charge-limit feature in settings, and no personal data or duties. It lives at the router, stays plugged in, and is replaced on condition, not on fashion. A retired family phone in good health is the classic candidate.
