Most of your Steam library will probably play. A few famous titles will not - by their publishers' design. Know which is which before you switch.
Gaming is where Linux has improved the most - and where the one remaining wall is completely real. Thanks to Valve's Proton layer, a large share of Windows games on Steam now run on Linux, many at full speed. But a specific category of games refuses to run at all, by design. This page draws that line precisely, so you can check your own library before Winux becomes your only system.
Proton is a compatibility layer built by Valve into Steam. Enable Steam Play in Steam's settings, and thousands of Windows-only games install and run on Linux as if they were native - Proton translates them the way Wine translates programs, but tuned for games and tested at huge scale. Because Winux stands on Ubuntu, everything that works for Steam gamers on Ubuntu applies here, including graphics driver installation through the built-in driver tool.
Never guess about a specific game. ProtonDB (protondb.com) collects player reports for each title, rated from Platinum down to Borked. A Platinum or Gold game will run for you; a Borked one will not, no matter what a forum post promises. Checking your top five games on ProtonDB takes five minutes and is the most honest five minutes in any switching decision.
Some competitive games protect themselves with anti-cheat software that demands to live inside the Windows kernel - the deepest layer of the system. Linux has no Windows kernel, so these games refuse to start:
Understand who built this wall: it is a publisher decision, not a Linux failure - and no distro, Winux included, can honestly promise you past it.
For games that do run, expect frame rates close to Windows - sometimes a few percent lower, occasionally equal or better, depending on the title and your graphics card. Modern NVIDIA and AMD cards are both well served on Ubuntu-based systems. What you should not expect is miracles on integrated graphics or very old GPUs; Proton translates software, it does not upgrade hardware.
Gaming on Linux in 2026 is genuinely good - for most libraries. The blocked minority is specific, named and checkable in advance, which is exactly why this page names it instead of waving it away.
The complete Winux walkthrough - download, installation and the full first look - is shown live in the video.
▶️ Watch Full VideoNo. Valorant's Vanguard anti-cheat requires the Windows kernel and blocks Linux entirely - this is true for every Linux distribution, not just Winux. If Valorant is your main game, keep a Windows dual boot for it.
Supported games usually run close to their Windows speed - a small difference either way is normal and varies by title and graphics card. Check the game's page on ProtonDB, where players report real performance on real hardware.
Use the Heroic Games Launcher, a free Linux app that manages and runs Epic Games and GOG libraries through the same Proton-style technology. It works on Ubuntu-based systems, including Winux.
