When You Should Not Switch to Winux Software That Pins You to Windows
Sometimes the right answer is do not switch - yet. These are the specific programs that pin a PC to Windows, and the middle paths for everyone caught in between.

Every Winux page in this series has been honest about limits; this one collects them into a decision. Software comes first, operating system second. If one of the programs below is the centre of your working day, the correct choice may be to stay on Windows - or to keep Windows for that job - and that is not failure. It is how professionals choose tools.
The usual anchors that keep a PC on Windows
Office with heavy VBA macros and add-insStays on Windows
Adobe Creative Cloud pro workflowsStays on Windows
AutoCAD and specialist CADStays on Windows
Tally with USB dongle, DSC tokensTest very carefully
Bank and broker trading terminalsOften Windows only
Valorant and similar anti-cheat gamesStays on Windows
Anchors are about specific software, not about Linux quality. If your list has none of these, this page is your green light.
1
The Rule - Software First, OS Second
List the programs you genuinely cannot work without - not the ones you open twice a year, the ones your income depends on. Then test that list against Linux reality: native Linux version, web version, strong alternative, or Wine report. If every essential program has a working answer, switch freely. If even one essential program has none, that program chooses your OS - and the rest of this page exists to name the usual suspects in advance.

The Usual Anchors - Office, Adobe, CAD
Microsoft Office with heavy VBA macros and add-ins. Plain documents travel fine to OnlyOffice or LibreOffice. Complex macro workbooks, specialist Excel add-ins and perfectly fixed print layouts do not - macros that run your business are a Windows anchor.
Adobe Creative Cloud. Photoshop, Premiere Pro and family do not install properly under Wine, and print/video professionals cannot gamble on partial alternatives. GIMP and Kdenlive serve many users - but if clients pay for Adobe workflows, stay.
AutoCAD and specialist CAD/engineering tools. Professional CAD remains Windows territory in most offices, whatever the brochures of any distro suggest.
Tally with a hardware dongle. Tally itself is a Windows program; under Wine the common failure is the USB dongle and licensing layer, not the screens. Add GST utilities and e-filing helpers that assume Windows, and a CA office must test exhaustively - on a spare machine - before dreaming of a switch.
DSC USB tokens. Digital signature tokens used for MCA, income tax and tender work often ship with Windows-only drivers and middleware, and the government sites around them are tested on Windows. If signing is your daily job, this alone can anchor you.
Bank and broker terminals. Many Indian trading and banking applications are Windows-only desktop programs with their own security layers. If your terminal has no proper web version, Windows stays.

Gaming Anchors
Short version of our gaming page: if Valorant, Fortnite or another title whose anti-cheat demands the Windows kernel is your main game, that game cannot come to Linux - on any distribution. Casual and single-player libraries travel well; this specific competitive category does not.

The Middle Paths - You Rarely Have to Choose Completely
Dual boot - Winux for daily life and the web; Windows kept, updated and used only for the anchored program or game. The most common professional answer.
A small dedicated Windows PC - many offices keep one modest Windows machine for DSC signing, Tally or the printer-from-1998, while every other desk moves on.
Windows in a virtual machine - good for light Windows programs on a strong PC; weak for dongles, heavy graphics and anti-cheat games.
Web versions - where a proper web app exists (Microsoft 365 on the web, web trading platforms), the anchor quietly dissolves.
The decision rule to keep: name your anchor programs before you install anything, test them honestly, and let the test - not enthusiasm, and not fear - make the call. If your list came back clean, go back to the install guide in this series and switch with confidence.

Only Tally needs Windows in my office. Must every PC stay on Windows?
No. Keep one Windows machine, or a dual boot, for Tally and its dongle - and test your exact Tally setup carefully, because dongle licensing is where Wine attempts usually fail. The other desks, doing documents, email and web work, can move to Winux freely.
Is keeping Windows for one program a weakness?
Not at all - it is the standard professional pattern. An operating system is a tool, and you keep the tool the job requires. Dual booting for one anchored program is a decision, not a defeat.
Can a virtual machine replace dual boot for my anchored software?
For light Windows programs on a reasonably strong PC, yes, and it is convenient. For hardware dongles, heavy graphics work and kernel anti-cheat games, no - those need real Windows on real hardware, which is what dual boot gives you.
