Immich Mobile App Automatic Photo Backup Setup for Android and iPhone

A photo server only protects you if the phone actually sends its photos to it. The Immich app does this automatically and in original quality — but two or three settings decide whether 'automatic' is real or just a word on a screen. Set them once, verify them once, then forget about it.

The most common Immich disappointment goes like this: the server is perfect, the app is installed, and three months later the owner discovers nothing has uploaded since the first day. The cause is never exotic — it is an unselected album, a background permission the phone quietly revoked, or a server address that only works at home. Here is the setup that survives real life.

1

Connect the App to Your Server

  1. Install the free Immich app from the Play Store or App Store — check the developer name; only the official app should ever see your library password
  2. On your home Wi-Fi, enter the server address exactly: http://YOUR-SERVER-IP:2283 — for example http://192.168.1.50:2283. The port is part of the address; leaving it out is the number one connection failure
  3. Sign in with the account you created in the web interface
  4. Give the app photo permission when asked — on modern phones choose carefully between 'all photos' and a limited selection; a backup app with limited access can only back up what it can see
2

Choose the Albums — the Step Everyone Skips

Installing the app does not automatically mean every photo folder is protected. Open the backup settings and look at the album list deliberately:

  1. Camera / DCIM — always on. This is the whole point
  2. WhatsApp and other messenger folders — decide consciously. They hold family photos you would genuinely miss, mixed with a flood of forwarded memes. Most families turn them on; storage is cheaper than regret
  3. Screenshots and Downloads — optional. Screenshots are often worth keeping; downloads rarely are
  4. After selecting, watch the first real upload happen. The backup screen shows a count — see it climb before you declare victory

The Settings That Protect Your Data Plan and Battery

  1. Wi-Fi only uploads: turn this on unless you have a truly unlimited plan. Original-quality videos are enormous, and one wedding on mobile data teaches this lesson expensively
  2. Background backup: allow it, and then fight your phone's battery optimiser. Many Android brands aggressively kill background apps — exempt Immich from battery optimisation or uploads will only happen when you open the app. On iPhone, background time is limited by iOS itself; the app resumes whenever it gets the chance, and a quick open every few days keeps it current
  3. Original quality is the default and the point: Immich stores the file the phone sends, uncompressed. Do not enable any 'storage saver' style option anywhere in the chain — a backup that shrinks your photos is a copy, not a backup
4

Verify Like a Technician, Then Trust It

  1. Take one photo. Lock the phone. Wait a few minutes on Wi-Fi
  2. Open Immich on a computer browser and confirm that exact photo is in the timeline
  3. Check the app again in a week — the backup status should show zero waiting. Make this a monthly ten-second habit
  4. Finally, the honesty rule: do not delete photos from the phone just because Immich has them. Immich sync mirrors deletions in some configurations, and one server is one copy. Delete from the phone only when you also have the separate backup described in the backup guide
🔴 Sync is not backup. If a photo is deleted on the phone and the deletion syncs, it can vanish from the server too. Immich protects you against a lost or broken phone. Protecting against deletion and server failure is the separate backup routine — do not skip it.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

The app only uploads when I open it. Why?

Your phone is killing it in the background. On Android, exempt Immich from battery optimisation and enable background backup in the app settings. On iPhone, iOS limits background work for every app; uploads resume when the app is opened or when iOS grants background time, so opening it briefly every few days keeps it honest.

Can two phones back up to the same Immich server?

Yes — that is the normal family setup. Create a separate account for each person in the web interface. Every library stays private, and you can then share selected albums with each other. Never share one login across the family; separate accounts are what make the privacy real.

Does Immich compress my photos like free Google Photos did?

No. Immich stores the original file exactly as uploaded, at full resolution and quality. The smaller versions you see while browsing are separate generated previews; the original is untouched underneath.
