Install VMware Tools in the Windows Guest What Changes After

A fresh Windows VM without VMware Tools has a blurry console, a missing network card and a host that can only power it off by force. One install fixes all of it. Here is exactly what changes.

Ask experienced ESXi admins for the first job after a Windows install and the answer is unanimous: VMware Tools, before updates, before software, before anything. This page shows the two-minute install and then lists, one by one, what actually changes - because once you see the list, you will never leave a VM without it again.

Device Manager - before and after Tools
Display adaptergeneric to VMware SVGAFIXED
VMXNET 3 adaptermissing to workingFIXED
Guest shutdownforce only to gracefulFIXED
Three of the most-reported 'ESXi problems' are one missing install. Tools is that install.
1

Install it - two minutes from the console

  1. With the VM running, open its console and choose Guest OS - Install/Upgrade VMware Tools (in the Host Client: Actions - Guest OS - Install/Upgrade VMware Tools)
  2. Inside Windows, a virtual CD appears - run setup.exe from it
  3. Accept the Typical install, let it finish, and reboot when asked - the drivers only load after the restart
2

What actually changes after the reboot

  1. Display: the real VMware SVGA driver replaces the generic one - resolution follows the console window, text is sharp, the mouse stops swimming
  2. Network: the VMXNET 3 driver arrives, so a VMXNET 3 adapter that 'did not exist' during install suddenly works
  3. Disk and memory: the PVSCSI driver story completes, and the balloon driver lets ESXi reclaim idle memory politely instead of swapping
  4. Control: the host can now shut down and restart the guest gracefully instead of pulling the plug
  5. Truth: ESXi finally sees the guest's real IP address, hostname and heartbeat, and performance counters become accurate
  6. Time: the guest clock can synchronise with the host - small thing, until a wrong clock breaks logins and certificates
3

Keep it updated, keep it honest

Tools is a living component: after ESXi upgrades, update Tools too - the console will tell you when a VM's Tools is out of date. And remember what Tools is not: it is not an antivirus, not a backup agent, and not a licence to skip Windows Update. It is the translator between guest and host. Every symptom list that starts with 'console laggy, network missing, shutdown hangs' should start its fix list with one question: is VMware Tools installed and current?

Diagnostic shortcut: blurry console plus missing network plus 'power off' as the only shutdown option is not three problems. It is one missing install.

Common Questions (FAQ)

How do I install VMware Tools if the VM has no network?

You do not need network. From the VM console choose Guest OS - Install/Upgrade VMware Tools; ESXi mounts a virtual CD inside the guest. Run setup.exe from that CD, accept the Typical install and reboot.

Windows says VMware Tools is installed but the console still looks blurry.

Check two things: reboot after the Tools install (drivers load only at restart), and set the console window larger - with the SVGA driver installed, the guest resolution follows the console size. If it is still wrong, reinstall Tools and confirm the VMware SVGA device in Device Manager.

Does VMware Tools update itself with Windows Update?

No. Tools is VMware's component, updated from the ESXi side - the host flags VMs whose Tools is out of date after ESXi upgrades. Keep Tools in step with the host version for the drivers to behave as tested.
