Create Sergei Strelec Bootable USB Step by Step

A Strelec rescue stick is only useful if it actually boots on the day a PC dies. This step-by-step guide builds the USB the official way, explains what Rufus and Ventoy change, and shows how to test the stick before you trust it.

Most failed rescue sticks fail for boring reasons — a half-extracted archive, the wrong write mode, or a stick that was never test-booted. Follow this order exactly and your Sergei Strelec USB will be ready before you need it: download clean, extract fully, write with one of three proven methods, then boot it once on a healthy PC as a test.

Extraction — Contents of the Official Strelec Download

What a clean official extraction looks like — if your download looks different, it did not come from the official site (example file names).
1

Step 1 — Download and Extract Completely

  1. Download the current build from sergeistrelec.name only
  2. Right-click the archive → 7-Zip or WinRAR → Extract, and enter the password strelec
  3. Wait for a full extraction with zero errors — a corrupt part file is the number one cause of a stick that half-boots
  4. Confirm the ISO and the Create a Bootable USB Drive folder are both present

If extraction reports errors, re-download. Do not try to repair a broken archive — every minute saved here costs an hour at a dead PC.

Step 2 — Method A, the Included USB Tools

The author's own route. Open the Create a Bootable USB Drive folder from the extraction and follow its included instructions — it prepares the stick with the boot files and copies the SSTR folder to the root. This method keeps the exact layout the toolkit expects, including the space for your own drivers and programs later.

  1. Plug in a stick of 8 GB or more — it will be erased
  2. Run the included utility as Administrator
  3. Select the USB stick carefully — double-check the drive letter
  4. Let it finish completely; do not pull the stick on a slow final percentage
3

Step 3 — Method B, Rufus, and Method C, Ventoy

Rufus: pick the stick under Device, select the Strelec ISO under Boot selection, keep the defaults, and press Start. Rufus formats the stick, so this is a dedicated Strelec stick afterwards.

Ventoy: install Ventoy on the stick once, then simply copy the Strelec ISO file onto it like a normal file. The ISO boots from the Ventoy menu and can live next to Windows installers and other rescue images. Ventoy is also the route that helps on Secure Boot machines, because its MokManager can enrol the needed key — that fix has its own guide in this series.

Choose Rufus for a single-purpose stick, Ventoy for a technician's multi-tool stick.

Step 4 — Test Boot Before You Trust It

  1. Restart a working PC and open the boot menu (F12 / F8 / Esc)
  2. Select the USB — on UEFI machines pick the entry that starts with UEFI
  3. Stop the countdown with an arrow key, choose Boot WinPE 11 Sergei Strelec (x64)
  4. Reach the desktop, open Programs WinPE, and launch one small tool to confirm everything runs

If the machine skips the stick entirely, the usual causes are Fast Boot hiding the menu, the stick in a dead USB port, or Secure Boot refusing the files — in that order of likelihood.

🔴 Erase warning: Rufus and the included creator both format the USB stick. The Ventoy route formats only when Ventoy itself is first installed. Check the stick's contents before you start, not after.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Which USB creation method is best for Strelec WinPE?

All three official routes produce a working stick. The included utilities keep the author's exact layout, Rufus is the fastest single-purpose option, and Ventoy is best if the stick must carry several ISOs. For a repair-shop stick, Ventoy plus Strelec is the most flexible combination.

My Strelec USB boots on one PC but not another. Why?

Usually the second PC's boot settings: Secure Boot refusing the unsigned boot files, the boot menu key being different, or the machine set to Legacy-only or UEFI-only mode. Test with Secure Boot temporarily off and the UEFI entry selected — and keep the BitLocker key of that PC handy before changing firmware settings.

Can I add my own files to the Strelec USB afterwards?

Yes — that is what the SSTR\USER folders are designed for. Your own drivers and portable programs placed there survive normal use, and our SSTR folder guide explains exactly which subfolder does what.
