Update Sergei Strelec WinPE Without Losing Your Added Files

New Strelec builds arrive several times a year with updated tools and drivers. Updating the wrong way wipes the drivers and portable programs you carefully added. This order — backup first, replace second, verify last — keeps everything.

🎥 Full video — updating the Strelec stick to the newest build without losing customisations

Everything personal on your Strelec stick lives in predictable places — above all the SSTR\USER folder with your drivers and added programs. Every safe update starts from that fact. The author offers smaller update downloads alongside the full build, and a full rebuild is sometimes cleaner — either way, the backup in step 1 is what makes the update risk-free.

Before You Touch Anything — the USER Folder Backup
SSTR \ USER \ MY_DRIVERS_x64Your drivers
SSTR \ USER \ MyToolsYour programs
Action — copy USER to a safe folderDO FIRST
Action — overwrite USER directlyNEVER
Ninety seconds of copying is the entire insurance policy for your customised stick (example view).
1

Step 1 — Back Up Your Customisations

  1. Plug the Strelec stick into a working PC
  2. Copy the complete SSTR\USER folder to a dated folder on the PC, for example Strelec Backup 2026-10
  3. If you edited startup files in the SSTR bat folder or registered programs into MInst, copy those too
  4. Note the current build's date or version from the stick, so you can prove later that the update actually landed
2

Step 2 — Get the Update from the Official Site Only

Go to sergeistrelec.name and check what is offered for your build. The author publishes a smaller update package for current users alongside the full download — the update is the fast path when your build is recent, while a very old stick is better served by the full fresh build. Extract any password-protected archive with the password strelec, and let the extraction complete with no errors before going further.

Update files from forums and repack sites are exactly how modified, infected toolkits spread. The official site is the only source used in this guide.

Step 3 — Apply the Update or Rebuild

Update package route: follow the instructions inside the package — typically it refreshes the program files on the stick while your SSTR layout stays in place. Let it finish fully.

Full rebuild route: recreate the stick with the new build using the included USB tools or Rufus, exactly as in the step-by-step creation guide. Then copy your backed-up SSTR\USER contents back into the fresh stick's USER folder — your drivers and portable programs return with it.

  1. Never interrupt a rebuild to save a few minutes
  2. Keep the old stick working until the new one passes step 4 — rebuild a second stick if the first is your only rescue tool
4

Step 4 — Verify Before the Next Emergency

  1. Boot a test PC from the updated stick and reach the desktop
  2. Confirm the new build identity shown in the boot menu or desktop
  3. Open Programs WinPE and launch one imaging and one diagnostic tool
  4. Check your own additions — your driver folder contents and portable tools in USER — are present
  5. If the stick may face Secure Boot machines, confirm your Ventoy or boot setup still works

An update you have not test-booted is a rumour, not a rescue tool. Two minutes now beats a dead stick at a customer's desk.

🔴 Label the stick after every update — build date on a small sticker or in a text file at the root. Six months later, nobody remembers which build is on the unmarked stick in the drawer.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I update my Strelec stick?

A few times a year is plenty for most technicians — when a build adds drivers for hardware you are starting to meet, or updates a tool you rely on. There is no need to chase every release; a tested, working stick beats a brand-new untested one.

Will the update package keep my added drivers and programs?

The official update route is designed for existing sticks and normally leaves your SSTR\USER content in place. Designed-to is not a guarantee, though — the USER backup in step 1 takes ninety seconds and makes the question irrelevant.

Can I update Strelec from inside WinPE itself?

Some builds and update packages can be applied while booted, and the project notes mention updating from WinPE with an internet connection. The PC-based route in this guide is still the safer habit: you keep a full backup, and the stick is never mid-update when a customer's PC is waiting.
