OwnCloud Appliance or One Click Hosting Install Which Route Fits You
Both routes install ownCloud without a terminal - they differ in where your files live, who fixes problems and what the limits are.

Two visual routes install the same ownCloud, and beginners often pick by whichever tutorial they found first. Pick by your life instead: where the files should live, how much data you honestly have, and who will fix the thing when it stops. This page scores both routes plainly.
The two routes on one honest scorecard
Runs onappliance - your PC or home server | hosting - the provider machine
Your files liveappliance - a disk in your house | hosting - a disk in a data centre
Storage limitappliance - the size of your own disk | hosting - your plan quota
When it breaksappliance - you reboot the VM | hosting - you open a support ticket
Neither route needs a terminal. They differ in where your files sleep at night.
An honest scorecard - the difference is custody of the disk, not features
1
The Appliance Route - Your House, Your Disk
The appliance is a ready-made virtual machine you run in VirtualBox or VMware on a machine you own - an old PC, a home server, or your main computer while you learn.
Full custody - the files are on your hardware; nobody else holds the disk
Storage is your problem and your freedom - a bigger disk is a one-time purchase, not a monthly plan upgrade
You are the technician - if the host PC sleeps, breaks or fills up, the cloud stops until you fix it
Free to run beyond the electricity the machine was already using
2
The Hosting Route - Their Machine, Their Problem
The one-click install lives on your web hosting. It is the fastest start in this whole series - and the one with the most honest fine print.
Zero hardware - no machine to keep running at home; the provider keeps it online
A real internet address from day one - sharing with family outside your house just works
Shared hosting ceilings - storage quotas, file-size limits and speed are set by your plan, and a big photo library can hit them fast
Trust is rented - the provider staff and their security now stand between the internet and your files
3
The Decision in Three Questions
Is this cloud for inside the house, or must people reach it from anywhere? Anywhere-access is easier on hosting; house-only is safer at home
How much data, honestly? A few GB of documents suits hosting. A lifetime of photos belongs on your own disk
Who fixes it at 11 pm when it stops? If the honest answer is "not me", hosting earns its fee
There is no wrong answer - there is only the answer that stops being true as your library grows. Moving later is possible: your files download intact, and accounts can be recreated. Pick the route that fits this year, not forever.

A Third Option Worth Naming - A NAS Box
Many home NAS units offer ownCloud-style apps or containers in their own app stores, again without a terminal. If a NAS is already on your shopping list, that is a legitimate middle road - your disk, appliance-style simplicity. Just check how the NAS maker handles updates before trusting it with the only copy of anything.
Watch the Complete Video Guide
The video walks the install itself - this page is the decision guide to read before you choose a door.
For pure speed of starting, the hosting one-click install - you can be logged in within minutes. For a beginner who cares most about privacy and big storage, the appliance on a spare home machine is better and costs nothing monthly. Both are covered step by step in the install video.
Can I start on hosting and move to my own machine later?
Yes. Your files are normal files - download them, install the appliance, upload them again and recreate the users and shares. The shares and settings do not travel automatically, so expect an evening of setup, not a data loss.
Does the appliance need a powerful computer?
No. For a home or small office, a couple of GB of RAM for the virtual machine and a disk big enough for your files is a sensible start. ownCloud Classic is a modest PHP application - it is far lighter than a full office suite server.
