Microsoft Office on the Web What You Lose

The easiest way to run real Microsoft Office on Zorin OS needs no installation at all - just a browser and office.com. But easy is not the same as complete. Here is exactly what the web versions give you, and exactly what they quietly leave out.

Office on the web is the route most switchers underestimate. It is genuine Microsoft software, it is free with a Microsoft account, and for a large share of everyday work it is genuinely enough. It is also not the full Office - and the missing pieces matter enormously if they are your pieces. This guide draws the line precisely.

Office on the Web - What Survives the Move to the Browser
Normal letters, invoices, reportsFull working
Real-time editing with othersExcellent
VBA macrosDo not run
Excel add-ins and Power Query depthMissing or reduced
Access and PublisherNot available
Working with no internetVery limited
👆 The browser versions are real Office apps with real limits - this is the honest feature ledger

How to Use It - Nothing to Install

  1. Open Firefox or any browser on Zorin OS and go to office.com
  2. Sign in with any Microsoft account - a free account gets the web apps with free OneDrive storage
  3. Open Word, Excel or PowerPoint from the app list, or upload an existing file from your PC to OneDrive and open it there
  4. Everything saves automatically to OneDrive as you type - there is no save button to forget

If you already pay for Microsoft 365, the same sign-in unlocks more storage and some extra features, but the web apps themselves are the same apps either way.

What Works Better Than You Expect

Co-editing is the web version's superpower. Share a link and two or three people can type in the same document at the same time, seeing each other's cursors - smoother than anything the Linux desktop suites offer. Version history is also excellent: every earlier state of the file is kept, so a bad edit is never the end of the world.

Formatting fidelity is perfect by definition - it is Microsoft's own software rendering Microsoft's own formats. A file that must look identical on a client's Windows PC will look identical, because the same company wrote both ends.

What You Honestly Lose

The Verdict - Who Should Live Here

Choose the web route if your documents are normal documents - letters, reports, quotations, household and small-office spreadsheets - especially if you share them with people who are still on Windows. It costs nothing to test: open your three most important real files in it today and work in them for an hour. If nothing you need is missing in that hour, this is your answer, and it will keep working no matter what happens to your Zorin OS install.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Is Office on the web free on Zorin OS?

Yes. With a free Microsoft account, the web versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint at office.com are free to use, with files stored in free OneDrive space. A Microsoft 365 subscription adds much more storage and some extras, but the web apps themselves work without paying.

Do macros work in Excel on the web?

No. Workbooks containing VBA macros open on the web, and you can edit their cells, but the macros themselves do not run. If a spreadsheet depends on macro automation, you need desktop Excel - on Zorin OS that means a Windows virtual machine.

Can two people edit the same file together on the web version?

Yes - this is its strongest feature. Share a link and several people can edit the same document at the same time with live cursors, comments and full version history. For collaborative work it beats every Linux desktop suite.
