Find What Is Really Eating Your C Drive Before You Delete Anything
Two PCs can both show a full C drive for completely different reasons — a bug file, a leftover Windows.old, swollen logs, or ten years of honest clutter. The fix for each is different. Ten minutes of measuring tells you which PC yours is, before a single file is deleted.

The amateur move is to open C:, sort folders by guesswork, and start deleting whatever looks big. The professional move is boring and faster: measure the whole drive, sort by size, and let the biggest item identify itself. Windows hides some of the largest consumers from Explorer entirely — the bug file from the video never appears as a folder at all. These are the two measuring tools that matter and how to read what they tell you.
Disk scanner run as administrator — largest items, example PC

Windows.old24.6 GBLEFTOVER
hiberfil.sys12.8 GBSYSTEM

SoftwareDistribution\Download5.1 GBCACHE
One list, four different fixes. The scanner does not clean anything — it tells you which page of this guide series is yours.
Example scanner result on a PC hit by several after-update problems at once. Most PCs show one dominant row.
1
First Pass — Read Storage Settings Properly
Open Settings → System → Storage and read the category bars: Apps, System & reserved, Temporary files, Documents, Other
Click into System & reserved → System files. A normal Windows lives around 25 to 40 GB here. Hundreds of GB means one hidden system file is bloated — the scanner in Fix 2 will name it
Click into Temporary files for the supported cleanup list — note the total, but do not clean yet if the System files number is the scary one
Write the free-space figure down. Every later step is verified against this number
2
Second Pass — Scan the Whole Drive Visually
Download a scanner from its official site only — WizTree is the fastest of the common free tools because it reads the drive's file table directly; TreeSize Free and WinDirStat are the classic alternatives
Run it as administrator. Without elevation it cannot see into protected system folders — which is exactly where the biggest files hide
Sort by size and look at the top entries, not the longest folders. One 200 GB file and two hundred 1 GB folders are different diseases
Expand the largest folders one level at a time until a specific file or a specific known location is holding the space
3
Read the Result Like a Technician
One giant file in ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\CapabilityAccessManager — the KB5095093 bug. Fix is the update, not deletion
Windows.old at 15 to 30 GB — a feature update's rollback copy. Fix is the Settings or Disk Cleanup route, after rescuing personal files
Windows\Logs\CBS full of CbsPersist files — servicing log bloat. Fix is the stop-service, clear-logs routine
SoftwareDistribution\Download holding GBs with a looping update — a corrupt download cache. Fix is the cache reset
pagefile.sys and hiberfil.sys — real system files with their own settings, not update leftovers. They are managed through system settings, never by deleting
Users folder genuinely huge — that is honest personal data. The answer is moving or archiving it, not any cleanup tool
4
Red Flags — Stop and Think
An unknown file of 50 GB or more inside a folder you do not recognize: identify it before touching it. Search its exact name first — system components, database files and backup images all look like junk to a tired eye
Any guide that tells you to delete the WinSxS folder, the Installer folder, or a protected ProgramData folder by hand is steering you into a broken Windows. Close it
If the scanner's total used space disagrees wildly with Settings, the difference is usually protected areas the scanner could not read — run it as administrator before doubting either number
On a work PC, a full drive is sometimes a roaming profile or a backup agent's local cache. If the big folder names a backup product, fix it in that product's settings
5
Verify the Fix With Numbers
After applying the matching fix, restart the PC once
Compare Settings → Storage against the figure from Fix 1 — the reclaimed space should match the size of the item you treated
Re-run the scanner only if the numbers do not add up; something else is holding space and the same reading method finds it
Finish with a sane target: roughly 10 to 15 percent of the drive free, so next month's updates have working room
🔴 Measure first is not a delay — it is the fix. Every cleanup in this series targets one specific pile. Ten minutes with a scanner is what separates the right ten-minute repair from an afternoon of deleting the wrong things.

Why does File Explorer not just show me folder sizes?
Explorer calculates folder sizes slowly, file by file, and it cannot enter protected system folders without elevation — which is precisely where the largest after-update files live. A scanner like WizTree reads the drive's master file table directly, which is why it maps a full drive in seconds and sees files Explorer never reports.
Is WizTree safe to use on my PC?
The tool itself is a well-known free disk analyzer — download it only from its official site, run it as administrator so it can see protected folders, and remember it only reports sizes. It deletes nothing by itself. The risky step is never the measuring; it is deleting system files based on a guess, which measuring exists to prevent.
The scanner and Settings show different totals. Which is right?
Both, about different things. Settings counts by category and includes areas scanners sometimes skip, while scanners count actual files and can double-count hard-linked system files if read naively. Use Settings for the official free-space figure and the scanner for one job: naming the single biggest files and folders. That division of labour never misleads.
