⬛ Black Screen Diagnosis

Black Screen With Cursor or Without Cursor Which Fix Applies

Two PCs can both show a black screen and need completely opposite repairs. The dividing line is one small detail most people never report: is the mouse pointer there or not? Read yours before touching a single setting.

Every professional black screen diagnosis starts with this fork. Pointer visible and moving means Windows has booted and is drawing to the screen — the fault sits in the desktop layer. No pointer at all means the picture itself never arrives — the fault sits in the display path or earlier in boot. Treating one like the other wastes hours: no amount of Explorer restarting fixes a dead display path, and no driver reinstall is needed when the shell simply failed to start. The video above walks through both branches on real machines.

One observation — pointer or no pointer — cuts the list of suspects in half before you change anything.

1

Branch One — Pointer Visible and Moving

Windows is alive and the graphics path works. Your problem is what loads after the pointer.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc and start or restart explorer.exe from Run new task
  2. If the desktop appears, the shell failed to start — a software layer fault, not hardware
  3. If Task Manager opens but Explorer will not stay running, suspect the user profile or a shell extension, and test from Safe Mode
  4. If nothing at all opens but the pointer moves for minutes, check disk load — a saturated hard disk can delay the desktop for a very long time
2

Branch Two — No Pointer Anywhere

The pointer is drawn by Windows early in the display start, so its absence points lower: driver, output, cable, monitor or boot itself.

  1. Press Win + Ctrl + Shift + B — a beep and a flash mean the driver restarted; watch whether a picture follows
  2. Press Win + P, then the down arrow and Enter, in case Windows is projecting to a disconnected second screen
  3. Check the monitor input source, reseat the cable at both ends, and try a different port on the PC
  4. If even the PC maker's logo never appears at power-on, leave Windows alone — this is now a display, cable or hardware check
3

The Third Case — A Pointer That Never Moves

A frozen pointer is neither branch. If the pointer is painted on the screen but does not respond to the mouse, the whole system has hung, not just its picture.

  1. Watch the hard disk activity light and listen — total silence plus a frozen pointer means a hard hang
  2. Hold the power button to force a shutdown, then restart and note whether it repeats
  3. Repeating hard hangs at the same point point at drivers, overheating or failing hardware — a different repair path from a live-pointer black screen
🔴 Report the pointer. If you call a technician or post in the video comments, the first thing they will ask is whether the cursor shows. Answering that one question accurately skips half the troubleshooting tree.

❓ Common Questions (FAQ)

My cursor is visible but Ctrl Shift Esc does nothing

Try Ctrl Alt Del instead — if that menu appears, choose Task Manager from it. If neither shortcut responds while the pointer still moves, give the PC several minutes first; a fully loaded disk can delay even Task Manager. If it still never opens, test in Safe Mode, where the shell usually starts cleanly.

The pointer appears only after a few minutes

That delay is itself the clue. The pointer arriving late means the display stack loaded slowly, which usually means the disk was saturated or the driver struggled to start. Once you are in, check Disk activity in Task Manager and the health of the drive.

No pointer and the monitor shows the desktop for a second then goes black

That flicker-and-die pattern usually means the display driver starts and then crashes, or the monitor loses sync at the desktop resolution. Boot into Safe Mode, where a basic driver runs, and roll back or reinstall the graphics driver from there.
