Laptop Screen Black After Connecting External Monitor Fix

You connected a monitor to your laptop and now the wrong screen is black — or you closed the lid to work on the big screen and lost everything. Nothing is broken. Windows is following display instructions you never knew you gave it.

Laptops juggle three display decisions at once: which screens are active (projection mode), which screen is the main one, and what closing the lid should do. A black laptop screen after connecting a monitor is almost always one of these three set differently than you expect — Windows sending everything to the external display, the external set as the only screen, or the lid set to sleep the machine. The video above includes this display output check in its black screen method; here it is in full, with the settings put back the way most people actually want them.

Projection modes — what each one really does
PC screen onlyExternal stays black
Second screen onlyLaptop stays black
DuplicateSame picture on both
ExtendTwo separate desktops

Half of all laptop black screen reports are simply Second screen only doing exactly what it promises.

1

Cycle the Projection Mode First

  1. Press Win + P
  2. Choose Extend if you want both screens live, or Duplicate for the same picture twice
  3. If the laptop screen is the black one and you cannot see the menu, press Win + P, then the arrow keys and Enter to cycle blind — the menu appears on whichever screen is active
  4. Many laptops also carry a function key with a screen icon (often Fn + F4 or F8) that does the same job
2

Set the Lid Behaviour You Actually Want

If closing the lid blacks out the external screen too, the laptop is probably sleeping — that is a power setting, not a display fault.

  1. Open Control Panel, Power Options, Choose what closing the lid does
  2. For desk use with an external monitor, set When I close the lid, Plugged in, to Do nothing
  3. Leave the Battery setting at Sleep — carrying a running laptop in a bag overheats it
  4. Remember you will need an external keyboard and mouse once the lid is closed
3

Choose the Main Display Deliberately

  1. Open Settings, System, Display and click each numbered box to identify which screen is which
  2. Select the screen you want sign-in and new windows to appear on
  3. Tick Make this my main display
  4. A laptop that boots with its own screen black until Windows loads may be handing the early display to the external port — that handover is normal on many models and not a fault
4

When It Really Is a Fault

Two patterns deserve suspicion instead of settings. If the laptop screen is black even with nothing connected and after a full restart, leave the projection settings alone and work the driver and hardware checks from the main guide. And if the screen flickers or blacks out as you move the lid, that is the display cable through the hinge wearing out — a hardware repair, honestly diagnosed, because no setting makes a frayed cable behave.

💡 Test with the lid open and the cable out. A laptop screen that works perfectly on its own was never broken — the settings around it were. Confirm that baseline before changing anything.

❓ Common Questions (FAQ)

Why does my laptop screen go black the moment I plug in HDMI

Because Windows remembered a previous Second screen only choice, or the laptop defaults to the external display when one is attached. Win plus P and choosing Extend or Duplicate brings the laptop panel back immediately.

Closing the lid turns off my monitor as well

The laptop is sleeping when the lid closes, which stops all output. Set the plugged-in lid action to Do nothing in Power Options, and keep the battery action on Sleep for safe carrying.

The screen goes black when I tilt the lid back

That movement sensitivity points at the display cable routed through the hinge, or occasionally a faulty lid sensor. It is a hardware pattern — settings and drivers cannot fix a cable that loses contact at an angle.
