Print From Your Phone to a USB Printer the Easy Working Method

No Wi-Fi on the printer is not the end of the story. With a small OTG cable and one printing app, an Android phone can drive most USB printers directly — if your phone supports OTG and the app carries a driver for your model. Here is the whole method, in order.

The document is on your phone, the printer is on the desk, and between them there is only a USB port — no Wi-Fi, no network, no computer in between. This is fixable. Android phones can act as a USB host, and printing apps carry the printer drivers that Android itself does not ship. Two honest warnings before we start: your phone must support USB OTG (most mid-range and above phones do, some budget phones do not), and the app must have a driver profile for your exact printer model or a close relative. When both are true, this works beautifully. When one is false, no app can save it — and this guide tells you how to check both before wasting time.

Check Your Phone Supports USB OTG First

OTG (On-The-Go) means your phone can act as the host — the boss of the USB connection — instead of only being a storage device. Without host mode, the printer will never even appear.

  1. The quick test: plug a USB pen drive into your phone with an OTG adapter. If the pen drive opens in your file manager, your phone supports OTG.
  2. No adapter handy? Free USB OTG checker apps on the Play Store read the phone's capability directly.
  3. Match the connector: newer phones need USB-C OTG, older ones micro-USB OTG. A charging cable is not an OTG cable — the adapter is wired differently inside.
2

Install a USB Printing App — It Carries the Driver

Android has a print system, but it ships with almost no drivers for USB printers. The printing app is the missing piece: apps in the PrinterShare, PrintHand and NokoPrint class bundle driver profiles for thousands of HP, Canon, Epson, Brother and other models, and speak to the printer over the OTG cable.

  1. Install the app from the Play Store only — never an APK from a random site.
  2. Open the app and look for the USB / OTG connection option (not Wi-Fi).
  3. The free versions usually print a test page or a limited set of pages; full printing is often a paid unlock. Print the free test page first — always — before paying anything.
3

Connect in the Right Order and Grant Permission

Order matters. A printer connected before the app is listening can sit there invisible.

  1. Switch the printer ON and let it finish its start-up cycle.
  2. Connect the printer's USB cable to the OTG adapter, and the adapter to the phone.
  3. Android shows a popup asking permission for the app to use the USB device — tap OK. No popup? Open the app and choose the USB printer manually.
  4. In the app, select your printer model if it asks. Pick the exact model, or the nearest model from the same series.
4

Print a Test Page, Then Your Document

Never send your real 20-page document first. Prove the chain with the smallest possible job.

  1. Use the app's test page option. A clean test page means phone, cable, app and driver all agree.
  2. Now open your document from inside the app, or use Share → Print from your PDF reader or gallery and choose the app.
  3. Set paper size (A4 for most Indian office paper), colour or black-and-white, and copies — then print.
  4. Keep the phone awake and the cable untouched while the job runs. A loose OTG connection mid-page is the most common cause of half-printed pages.
🖨️ The honest limit: USB printers were designed for computers, not phones. If your exact printer model has no driver profile in any printing app, this method cannot work for that printer — the fallbacks are printing through a PC that stays switched on, or a printer with Wi-Fi. Both are covered in separate guides on this site.

❓ Common Questions (FAQ)

Will this work with every USB printer?

No. It works when two things line up: your phone supports USB OTG, and the printing app has a driver profile for your printer model or its series. Popular HP, Canon, Epson and Brother models are widely covered; very old or very unusual models may not be. The free test page tells you the truth before you spend anything.

My phone charges the printer's cable but nothing is detected. Why?

Charging proves only power, not host mode. Either the phone does not support OTG, or you are using a plain charging cable instead of an OTG adapter. Test the same adapter with a pen drive — if the pen drive does not open, the chain is broken at the phone or adapter, not at the printer.

Is the printing app free?

Most USB printing apps are free to install and free for a test page or a few pages, then ask for a paid premium unlock for unlimited real printing. That is fair — the driver library is their real work. Always confirm your printer prints a clean test page on the free tier before paying.
