Printer Not Detected by Phone on USB OTG Fixes in the Right Order

When a phone cannot see a USB printer, the failure is in one of five places — and guessing wastes more time than testing. This checklist walks the chain from the phone outward, in the order that finds the fault fastest.

Nothing is detected. The cable is in, the printer is humming, and the app shows an empty list. Do not start by reinstalling the app — detection fails for physical reasons far more often than software ones. The chain is: phone host mode → OTG cable → USB permission → printer state → app and driver. Test each link once, in order, and the broken one will identify itself.

Not detected — test the chain in this order
1  Pen drive on the same adapter — opens or not?
2  OTG adapter, not a charging cable
3  USB permission popup — granted to the app?
4  Printer fully started, no error light
5  Printer selected manually inside the app
Five links, five one-minute tests — the first test that fails is your problem.

Test 1 and 2 — Prove the Phone and the Cable

Remove the printer from the story completely. Plug a pen drive into the same OTG adapter.

  1. Pen drive opens in the file manager → phone host mode and adapter are good. Move to Test 3.
  2. Pen drive does not open → the phone does not support OTG, OTG is switched off in settings (some brands bury a toggle), or the adapter is a charge-only cable. Try the adapter on another phone to separate phone from cable.
  3. On some phones OTG turns itself off after a few idle minutes — reconnect and test immediately.
2

Test 3 — The Permission Popup You May Have Dismissed

Android asks before an app may use a USB device. If that popup was dismissed once, the app can sit blind forever.

  1. Unplug the adapter, open the printing app first, then reconnect — the popup usually returns.
  2. Tick use by default if offered, then tap OK.
  3. Still no popup? In the app, look for a Select printer → USB option and add it manually.
  4. As a last software step, clear the app's data from Android settings and set it up fresh — this also resets a wrong stored default.
3

Test 4 and 5 — Printer State and Manual Selection

  1. Confirm the printer prints from a computer today. A printer with its own error (paper jam state, blinking lights, deep sleep) may not announce itself on USB at all. Wake it with its power button, not by re-plugging.
  2. Use the printer's original square Type-B cable run, not a long chain of hubs and extenders — connect directly for the test.
  3. In the app, choose the printer model manually even if auto-detect stays empty; some models respond only after the correct profile is loaded.
  4. Try the other USB port on the printer if it has more than one — a few models have a port meant only for a PC or a camera.

If the Whole Chain Tests Good and It Still Fails

Sometimes every link is healthy and the answer is still no: the printer is a host-based model whose intelligence lives in the Windows driver, and no phone app profile exists for it. Accept the evidence after the five tests and switch routes — print through a PC that stays on, or move to a Wi-Fi-capable printer. Hours of reinstalling will not change a missing driver.

🔌 The 60-second separator: pen drive test first. It splits the problem in half instantly — if a pen drive works on the same adapter, your phone and cable are innocent, and every remaining suspect is permission, printer state, or the app's driver.

❓ Common Questions (FAQ)

The permission popup appeared once and I tapped outside it. How do I get it back?

Unplug the OTG adapter, force-stop the printing app from Android settings, reopen the app, and reconnect the cable. The popup is tied to the connection event, so a fresh plug-in with the app open almost always brings it back.

My phone detects the printer only sometimes. What causes that?

Usually a tired OTG adapter or a phone that disables OTG when idle. Wiggle-test the adapter gently while watching the app — if detection flickers, replace the adapter. Also disable battery optimisation for the printing app so Android does not put its USB service to sleep.

The app detects a printer but with a different model name. Is that safe?

It commonly happens within a model series that shares one driver profile, and printing normally works. Print the test page: clean output means the profile matches well enough. Garbled output means pick your exact model manually instead.
