Bluetooth Missing From Settings Windows Driver Fix

There is no Bluetooth switch in Settings, no Bluetooth icon, and sometimes no Bluetooth section in Device Manager at all. Windows hides Bluetooth completely when its driver or service is missing.

Unlike Wi-Fi, Windows does not show a greyed-out Bluetooth page when things go wrong — it removes the whole thing. After a fresh install, the usual reason is simple: on most laptops the Bluetooth radio lives on the same card as Wi-Fi, and its separate Bluetooth driver did not get installed. Sometimes the driver is fine but the Bluetooth Support Service is stopped. We check both, in order.

👆 No toggle in Settings plus no Bluetooth group in Device Manager means Windows cannot see a working Bluetooth radio — driver first, hardware second.

1

Look for the Hidden Bluetooth Device

  1. Right-click Start → Device Manager
  2. Click View → Show hidden devices — a faded Bluetooth group may now appear
  3. If Bluetooth appears faded or with a yellow mark, the device exists but its driver is broken or missing — go to Fix 3
  4. Also turn Airplane mode off from the taskbar network panel — it silently blocks Bluetooth too
2

Start the Bluetooth Support Service

  1. Press Windows + R, type services.msc and press Enter
  2. Find Bluetooth Support Service, double-click it
  3. Set Startup type: Automatic, click Start, then OK
  4. Restart the PC and check Settings again

Install the Bluetooth Driver From the Manufacturer ⭐

This is the fix for most fresh-install cases. Remember: the Bluetooth driver is a separate download from the Wi-Fi driver, even though both live on the same card.

  1. Try Windows Update → Advanced options → Optional updates → Driver updates first — Bluetooth drivers often wait there
  2. If not, open your laptop maker's support page, enter the exact model number
  3. Download the Bluetooth driver (Intel Wireless Bluetooth, Realtek or Qualcomm, matching your card) for your Windows version
  4. Install it, restart, and the Bluetooth toggle appears in Settings

The video above walks through this complete driver process — finding the right model page and installing in the right order.

If Your PC Never Had Bluetooth

On desktop PCs this is common: many motherboards simply have no Bluetooth hardware. Check your motherboard or PC specification — if Bluetooth is not listed, no driver in the world can switch it on. The correct and cheap solution is a small USB Bluetooth dongle, which installs with its own driver and works within minutes.

🛑 Honest note: if the driver installs without error but Bluetooth still never appears — and it also fails on a second Windows install — the wireless card itself may be faulty. That is a hardware repair, not a settings problem.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Does every PC have Bluetooth hardware?

No. Almost all laptops do, but many desktop motherboards have no Bluetooth at all — it usually comes with the Wi-Fi card. If your desktop never had Bluetooth, no driver can add it; a small USB Bluetooth dongle is the correct solution.

Bluetooth worked before formatting but not after. Why?

The fresh Windows install did not carry your Bluetooth driver. The radio is combined with the Wi-Fi card on most laptops, so install the Bluetooth driver from your laptop maker's support page for your exact model and it returns.

Bluetooth is back but my earbuds will not pair. What should I check?

Remove the old pairing from both the PC and the earbuds, put the earbuds back into pairing mode, and pair fresh. Also confirm the Bluetooth Support Service is running and set to Automatic.
