Display Stuck at Low Resolution Graphics Driver Fix

Huge icons, a stretched picture, and the resolution list stops at 1024 by 768 with no way to go higher. Your monitor is fine — Windows is driving it with a basic backup driver.

When Windows cannot find a driver for your graphics chip, it falls back to the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter — a safe-mode style driver that only promises one thing: you will see a picture. It does not know your screen's real resolution, so everything looks big and slightly blurry, games crawl, and even the refresh rate stays locked low. The fix is simply to give Windows the real graphics driver from Intel, NVIDIA or AMD. Here is how, in the right order.

Settings — Display, and Device Manager

👆 "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" in Device Manager is the giveaway — Windows has not found your real graphics driver yet.

1

Confirm the Basic Driver Is the Problem

  1. Right-click Start → Device Manager → open Display adapters
  2. If it says Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, your doubt is over — continue below
  3. If it already shows Intel, NVIDIA or AMD, your low resolution has another cause — check the FAQs at the bottom
2

Try Windows Update and Optional Updates First

  1. Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates, install and restart
  2. Then Advanced options → Optional updates → Driver updates — graphics drivers often sit here
  3. Restart and open Display settings — the full resolution list should now appear

This covers most laptops. Dedicated gaming GPUs usually need the next fix for the newest driver.

3

Install the Real Driver From Intel, NVIDIA, AMD or Your Laptop Maker ⭐

  1. For a laptop, open your laptop maker's support page, enter the exact model, and download the Display / VGA driver
  2. For a desktop graphics card, download directly from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel using your exact card model (visible on the card or its box)
  3. Run the installer, choose the standard install, and let the screen flicker — that is normal while the driver loads
  4. Restart, then set your resolution in Settings → System → Display — pick the one marked Recommended

The video above shows the complete driver-hunting process — model number to installed driver — for exactly this kind of job.

If the Screen Goes Black During Install

Do not panic and do not force a shutdown for at least 2 to 3 minutes — the display driver restarts the screen several times during installation. If the picture never returns after 10 minutes, restart the PC; Windows will load the previous driver, and you can retry with the driver from your laptop or PC maker instead of the chip maker (some laptops need the customised version).

🛑 Honest note: a driver cannot give your monitor more resolution than its panel physically has. If the Recommended resolution looks small on an old 1366 × 768 laptop screen, that is the panel's real limit, not a fault.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my refresh rate also stuck at 60Hz or 64Hz?

For the same reason — the basic display driver cannot use your panel's real modes. Once the correct Intel, NVIDIA or AMD driver is installed, both the full resolution list and the higher refresh rates appear in Display settings.

The correct driver is installed but resolution is still low. What now?

Check the cable and port: a faulty HDMI cable can limit the reported modes, and on desktops use the graphics card port instead of the motherboard port. Also confirm the right monitor is selected in Display settings if two displays are connected.

Can I force a custom resolution without the driver?

Not properly. Tools that force resolutions on the basic driver give a stretched, blurry picture and the setting is lost on restart. Installing the real graphics driver is the only correct fix — it takes ten minutes.
