Touchpad Not Working After Fresh Windows Install Driver Fix

Windows setup finished, the desktop is open — but the cursor does not move at all. In almost every case the touchpad is not broken. Its driver simply did not come with the fresh install.

Modern laptop touchpads do not connect the old simple way. Most of them talk to Windows through an I2C bus, and Windows setup often does not carry that I2C or touchpad driver. The result: the touchpad may even work inside the BIOS, then go completely dead the moment Windows loads. Plug in a USB mouse for now — it works on a generic driver — and follow the fixes below in order.

👆 If you see a yellow mark on I2C HID Device, or the touchpad is missing from the list, it is a driver problem — not dead hardware.

1

First Check the Touchpad Fn Key and Settings

Before drivers, rule out the two-minute causes. Many people reinstall a driver when the touchpad was only switched off.

  1. Look at the F-keys on your keyboard (often F5, F7 or F9) for a touchpad symbol and press it once with Fn
  2. Open Settings → Bluetooth and devices → Touchpad and make sure the Touchpad switch is On
  3. Restart the laptop once and test again
2

Let Windows Update and Optional Updates Find It

Windows Update carries I2C and touchpad drivers for most popular laptops — they just hide in the optional section.

  1. Open Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates, install everything and restart
  2. Then open Advanced options → Optional updates → Driver updates
  3. Tick anything named Synaptics, ELAN, I2C, HID or your laptop brand and install it
  4. Restart and test the touchpad
3

Install the Touchpad and Chipset Driver From the Laptop Maker ⭐

This is the fix that works when Windows Update finds nothing. The touchpad driver depends on the chipset and I2C drivers, so install them in order.

  1. On your phone or another PC, open your laptop maker's support site (Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus, Acer)
  2. Enter your exact model number from the sticker under the laptop
  3. Download and install the Chipset / I2C driver first, restart
  4. Then download and install the Touchpad driver (Synaptics, ELAN or Precision) and restart again

Still Dead — Check in Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start → Device Manager
  2. Open Human Interface Devices and check the I2C HID Device — a yellow mark means the driver is still missing, repeat Fix 3
  3. If the device shows a down-arrow, right-click it and choose Enable device
  4. If no touchpad or I2C device appears at all, open the BIOS (usually F2 or Del at startup) and check the touchpad works there — if it is dead in BIOS too, it is a hardware or loose-cable issue, not a driver
🛑 Honest check: driver fixes only work when Windows can see the device. If the touchpad does not respond even inside the BIOS menu, no driver will help — the touchpad cable or the touchpad itself needs a repair shop.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the touchpad work in BIOS but not in Windows?

Because the BIOS talks to the touchpad directly, while Windows needs the I2C or touchpad driver. If it works in the BIOS menu but not after Windows loads, the hardware is fine and only the driver is missing.

Can I use the laptop while the touchpad driver is missing?

Yes. Plug in any USB mouse — it uses a generic Windows driver and works immediately. Finish the driver installation with the mouse, then unplug it and the touchpad takes over.

My touchpad moves but two-finger scroll and gestures do not work. Why?

Basic movement works with the generic driver, but scrolling, pinch zoom and multi-finger gestures need the full Precision, Synaptics or ELAN driver from your laptop manufacturer. Install that driver and the gestures return.
