WiFi Adapter Missing After Windows Install No Internet Driver Fix

The cruel loop after a fresh install — you need the internet to download the Wi-Fi driver, but you need the Wi-Fi driver to get internet. Here is how technicians break that loop, fully offline.

After a fresh Windows install there is no Wi-Fi icon, no network list, nothing — because Windows setup did not carry your wireless adapter's driver. The adapter has not vanished; it is sitting in Device Manager as Network Controller with a yellow mark, waiting for its driver. Since the PC itself cannot go online, the driver must arrive from somewhere else. You have four honest routes — use whichever is easiest for you.

👆 That "Network Controller" with the yellow mark is your Wi-Fi card without its driver. Once the driver lands, Wi-Fi appears by itself.

Quick Checks Before Anything Else

  1. Make sure Airplane mode is off — click the network icon in the taskbar and check
  2. Many laptops have a physical Wi-Fi switch or an Fn key with an antenna symbol — press it once
  3. If any LAN port is nearby, plug a network cable even for 10 minutes — one wired session solves everything in Fix 2 automatically
2

Route 1 — Borrow Internet for Ten Minutes

The fastest escape: give the PC any temporary internet, then let Windows do the work.

  1. Connect your phone with a USB cable and turn on USB tethering in the phone's settings (or connect a LAN cable)
  2. Open Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates
  3. Then open Advanced options → Optional updates → Driver updates and install the wireless driver
  4. Restart — the Wi-Fi icon and network list appear, and the borrowed connection is no longer needed
3

Route 2 — Download the Driver on Another Device ⭐

No cable and no tethering? Download the driver file somewhere else and carry it across.

  1. On your phone or a friend's PC, open your laptop maker's support page and enter your exact model number
  2. Download the Wireless LAN / Wi-Fi driver for your Windows version
  3. Copy the file to the PC using a pen drive or the phone's USB cable
  4. Run the installer, restart, and connect to your Wi-Fi

This is exactly Method 2 from the video — the manufacturer's website — just done from a second device.

Route 3 — The Fully Offline Driver Pack

If you do this work often, keep the full version of Snappy Driver Installer on a pen drive. It carries a huge driver library and needs no internet at all: plug it in, let it scan, and install the network driver it finds. Once Wi-Fi is alive, run Windows Update to finish the remaining drivers properly. And for your own PC, remember the long-term habit from the video: back up your working drivers with DISM /Online /Export-Driver /Destination:D:\DriverBackup before the next format, so this trap never catches you again.

🛑 Honest note: if the Network Controller does not appear in Device Manager at all — even as an unknown device — the Wi-Fi card may be disabled in BIOS or physically faulty. Check the BIOS wireless setting before downloading anything.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there no Wi-Fi option at all in Settings?

Windows only shows the Wi-Fi option when it detects a working wireless adapter with a driver. If the network driver is missing, the adapter hides as Network Controller or Unknown Device in Device Manager and the Wi-Fi page disappears completely.

Can I share my phone internet with the PC without any driver?

Yes. Connect the phone with a USB cable and turn on USB tethering in the phone settings. Windows uses a generic driver for tethering, so the PC gets internet immediately — enough to download the real Wi-Fi driver.

How do I know which Wi-Fi driver my laptop needs?

Use your exact laptop model on the manufacturer's support page — it lists the correct wireless driver for your machine. If two brands are listed (Intel, Realtek or Qualcomm), check Device Manager's Hardware Ids for the Network Controller to see which vendor is inside.
