Before Updating ZV-E10 Firmware Battery and Settings Backup Checklist
Ninety percent of firmware update safety is decided before the updater even opens - battery, settings backup, card, cable and a computer that stays awake. This checklist covers all of it in ten minutes.

People fear the ten minutes of the update itself, but updates almost never fail in the middle for no reason - they fail because the battery was tired, the laptop slept, or the cable was a charge-only one. This page is the before work for the ZV-E10 update to 2.03 - the checks that make the update itself boring, which is exactly what you want.

The two states that stop more updates than any software bug - a half-charged battery and a card left in the camera.
1
The Battery Rule - Full, Not Just Enough
Sony's help guide for this camera states the update can only be performed when the battery level shows 3 bars or more, and Sony's updater instructions ask for a fully charged rechargeable battery pack, the NP-FW50. Treat the fully charged wording as the rule and the 3 bars as the technical minimum.
Charge the battery in the camera or an external charger until it is genuinely full - not just off the charger for a minute
Prefer a genuine or known-good battery for update day. An old third-party pack that drops from 3 bars to empty in minutes is a risk you do not need
During the update, never remove the battery. Sony warns plainly that a sudden loss of power may cause the camera to stop working
If the battery icon is borderline, postpone. The update will still be there tomorrow - a half-written firmware may not be fixable at home
2
Your Settings Backup - Photos, Because There Is No File
Newer Sony bodies can save a settings file to the memory card. The original ZV-E10 has no such settings export, so your backup is manual - and it takes five honest minutes.
Photograph or note your custom key assignments and your Fn menu layout - these are the settings people miss most
Note your picture profile choice and any tweaks, plus stills settings you changed - drive mode, focus area defaults, ISO limits
Note your movie settings - file format, frame rates, and your USB streaming choices if the camera works as your webcam
Keep the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth pairings in mind - network details are among the things that can need re-entry after system changes
In practice, most personal settings carry across a Sony update untouched - this backup exists for the exception, and for the peace of mind to update without hesitation.
3
The Computer and Cable Checklist
Remove the memory card from the camera before the computer update - this is in Sony's own instructions for this model
Disable sleep on the computer for the next half hour. The update takes about 10 minutes, and Sony states that if the computer sleeps and interrupts it, the entire process must be restarted
Close other programs and keep the computer online - the updater wants a clean, connected machine
Find the supplied USB cable. Sony does not guarantee update functionality with any other cable. Charge-only cables without data lines are a classic hidden cause of failed updates
Pick a calm slot - not the night before a paid shoot, not with a client waiting. Ten relaxed minutes beat ten rushed ones
🔴 If any line of this checklist fails, stop before you start. Every item here is free and takes minutes. The failures these checks prevent - a dead battery mid-write, a sleeping laptop, a charge-only cable - are the ones that turn a routine update into a service-centre visit.

About ten minutes - a full battery charge takes longer if you start from empty, but the checks themselves are quick - battery in, card out, sleep off, settings noted, supplied cable in hand. The update itself then takes roughly ten more minutes.
Will the update erase my photos
No. The update rewrites the camera's system software, not your memory card - and for the computer update route Sony asks you to remove the card before starting anyway. Your photos stay on the card, untouched.
Do I need a spare battery for the update
One genuinely full, healthy NP-FW50 is enough - the update runs for about ten minutes. What you should not do is start on a tired battery that only just shows 3 bars, or on an unknown third-party pack with unreliable level reporting.
