A camera firmware update feels risky because it rewrites the camera itself - but the process is routine when three things are respected - a full battery, an untouched cable, and patience for about ten minutes. This guide walks the whole update to version 2.03 in that spirit, and starts with the honest part - what this update does and does not change.

What Firmware 2.03 Actually Changes
Honesty first, because this decides whether the update is urgent for you. Sony's notes for version 2.03 list exactly one change - it improves the operational stability of the camera. No new shooting mode, no new menu feature and no new autofocus trick is listed. Anyone promising big new features in 2.03 is guessing.
That does not make the update useless. Stability updates fix the rare freeze, the occasional hang on start-up and the small glitches that never get named in public. But it does mean there is no emergency - you update in a free half hour, never in a panic before a shoot. For context, the earlier 2.02 release was the bigger one - it added on-camera update notifications and removed the old WPA and WEP Wi-Fi options. Version 2.03 is a quiet maintenance release on top of that.

Before You Start - The Safety Checklist
A firmware update rewrites the camera's own software. It is safe when the basics are covered and risky only when they are skipped. Sony's own instructions for this camera are clear on every point below.
Charge the battery fully. Use a fully charged NP-FW50 battery pack. Sony states the update can only run when the battery shows 3 bars or more - treat fully charged as the real rule, not the minimum
Never remove the battery or switch off during the update. A sudden loss of power mid-update can leave the camera unable to start. This is the one rule with no exceptions
Note your important settings. This camera has no one-click settings backup file, so your backup is a phone photo or a short note of your key screens - custom key assignments, Fn menu, picture profile, movie settings and Wi-Fi details
Remove the memory card from the camera before starting the computer update, exactly as Sony instructs
Keep the computer awake. The update takes about 10 minutes. If the computer sleeps midway, Sony says the whole update process has to be restarted - disable sleep temporarily
Use the USB cable supplied with the camera. Sony does not guarantee the update with other cables

Download the Updater From Sony Only
On your computer, open Sony's official support page for the ZV-E10 and find the system software update for version 2.03 for your operating system, Windows or Mac
Download the updater file and save it somewhere easy to find, such as the desktop
Close all other programs on the computer before you run it, and keep the computer connected to the internet
Never download camera firmware from a random file-sharing or driver site. The updater writes directly to your camera - the official Sony page is the only safe source
The full download and update, exactly as performed on the camera, is shown in the video above.

The updater shows your current version and the target version before anything is written. If 2.03 is not shown here, you downloaded the wrong file - stop and re-download.
4
Run the Update - Connect Only When Asked
On the camera, first set the USB mode - MENU then Setup then USB Connection - and confirm Mass Storage is selected
Double-click the downloaded updater file to start the System Software Updater. Do not connect the camera yet
Turn the camera on and connect it to the computer with the supplied USB cable. USB Mode appears on the camera screen
Click Next in the updater. It shows your current version and the new version - check that the new one reads 2.03
Confirm and let the update run. Do not touch the camera, the cable or the computer while it progresses
When the updater says the update is complete, close it, disconnect the cable and let the camera restart normally
5
Verify the Update Worked
On the camera open MENU then Setup then Version
The body version should now read Ver. 2.03. The same screen also shows your lens firmware version when a supported lens is attached
Put your memory card back, take a test photo and record a short test clip. Check playback and one USB streaming or transfer connection if you use them
Spot-check the settings you noted before the update - custom keys, picture profile and movie settings. Most settings carry over, but the two minutes spent checking beats discovering a change mid-shoot
🔴 The two rules that protect your camera - fully charged battery in, and hands off everything until the updater itself says complete. Almost every bricked-camera story starts with a flat battery or a cable pulled too early. Neither can happen if you follow Step 2 and Step 4 exactly.

Does firmware 2.03 add any new feature to the ZV-E10
No new feature is listed. Sony's notes for 2.03 state a single change - improved operational stability. The update is worth doing in a free slot for reliability, but nobody should expect a new mode or menu after installing it.
Can I skip a version and update straight to 2.03
Yes. Sony system software updates are complete packages, not patches on top of the previous version. A camera on 2.00, 2.01 or 2.02 can update directly to 2.03 with the same updater and the same precautions.
My battery shows only 2 bars. Can I start the update
No. Sony states the update can only be performed at 3 battery bars or more, and its instructions ask for a fully charged NP-FW50 pack. Charge first. A power loss during the write is the one failure that can leave the camera unable to start.
