Every creator who has dialled in custom keys, a favourite picture profile and a streaming setup asks the same question before updating - will I lose all of it. The short answer is no, and this page gives the full one - what carries over, the few things worth checking, and a graded verdict on whether a stability-only update like 2.03 deserves your ten minutes.

The three areas worth two minutes after any update. Everything else on this camera normally carries over untouched.
1
What a Sony Update Normally Does to Your Settings
The honest picture first - Sony system software updates are designed to carry your settings over, and in most updates on this camera every personal setting survives exactly as you left it. There is no factory reset hiding inside a firmware update.
What normally survives - custom keys, Fn menu, shooting and movie settings, picture profiles and your saved configurations
What deserves a check anyway - date and time after any long power-off period, and network details, since system-level changes can occasionally touch connections - 2.02, for example, deliberately removed the old WPA and WEP Wi-Fi options as a security change
What never survives confusion - if a setting looks wrong, compare it against the photos or notes you took before updating. That two-minute habit turns an argument with your memory into a ten-second check

The Restore Checklist - Five Areas, Two Minutes
Custom keys and Fn menu - press your usual buttons. If one does nothing or does something else, reassign it in the custom key settings
Picture profile - open the profile you shoot with and confirm it is still selected with your settings. For a creator this is the single most visible setting on the camera
Movie defaults - file format, frame rate and your USB streaming choice, so the next recording starts the way the last one did
Focus defaults - focus mode and focus area, plus Face and Eye AF behaviour if you present to camera
Connections - reconnect Wi-Fi or Bluetooth once and confirm the camera pairs with your phone and transfers a photo. Re-enter details if asked - it is a one-time chore, not a fault

Should You Even Update - The Graded Answer
Because 2.03 lists only improved operational stability, the decision grades cleanly.
Update soon if your camera occasionally freezes, hangs on start-up or behaves oddly now and then. Stability releases exist precisely for that pattern
Update in your next free slot if the camera works perfectly. There is no feature to rush for, but staying current keeps small fixes accumulating in your favour, and the job takes ten prepared minutes
Deliberately wait if a paid shoot, a trip or a deadline is tomorrow. Never change a working camera's software the day before it earns money - update the day after, with the same care
Whatever you decide, decide by the checklist, not by fear - a full battery, the supplied cable and an awake computer make this one of the safest maintenance jobs in a creator's kit
🔴 Something feels reset - do not start changing everything. Work the five-area checklist above against your before-photos first. Nine times out of ten, everything is exactly where you left it, and the one difference is a setting you forgot you had changed yourself weeks ago.

No. A firmware update is not a factory reset, and Sony updates are designed to preserve your settings. Custom keys, profiles and shooting settings normally carry over untouched. The checklist on this page exists for the occasional exception, not the rule.
Why did my Wi-Fi options look different after updating
Version 2.02 deliberately removed the old WPA and WEP security options from the Wi-Fi menu as Sony moves everyone to WPA2 - so a camera coming from an older version can legitimately show a small network-menu difference after updating. Reconnect with WPA2 and you are done.
I skipped the before-photos. How do I know what changed
Work through the five areas on this page and set each one the way you actually shoot - keys, profile, movie defaults, focus and connections. On this camera almost everything survives an update, so in practice you are confirming your setup, not rebuilding it.
