Sony ZV-E10 Updater Does Not Detect Camera USB Connection Fix
The updater sits on waiting and the camera is plugged in - this is the most common ZV-E10 update stall, and it is almost always the USB mode, the cable or the connection order. All three are fixable in minutes.

You downloaded the right file, started the updater - and it just waits for a camera that is already connected. Before suspecting the camera, know this - the updater only recognises the ZV-E10 in one USB mode, over a data-capable cable, connected in the right order. This page works through all three, in the order they actually cause the problem.

The classic stuck state - the updater waits forever because the camera is in the wrong USB mode or on a charge-only cable.
1
Set the Camera to Mass Storage First
This is the number one cause. The updater looks for the camera in one specific USB mode, and the camera may be sitting in another.
Disconnect the camera for a moment and open MENU then Setup then USB Connection
Select Mass Storage. If any other mode is selected - PC Remote, for example - the updater will not see the camera
Start the updater on the computer first, and only then turn the camera on and connect the USB cable, in that order
The camera screen should show USB Mode. Without that screen, the connection has not really been made
2
The Cable and Port Ladder
Use the cable supplied with the camera. Sony states update functionality is not guaranteed with any other USB cable. Many thin cables are charge-only and carry no data at all
Connect directly to the computer - not through a USB hub, dock or monitor port, which interrupt exactly this kind of device handshake
Try a different USB port on the computer, preferably one on the machine itself rather than a front-panel extension
Do not connect the camera to anything else at the same time - Sony's instruction is the computer and nothing else
On Windows, give the machine a moment after connecting - a first connection can take a little while to settle before the updater responds
3
Restart the Handshake Cleanly
Close the updater completely, switch the camera off and unplug the cable
Close all other programs on the computer - Sony asks for this before updating, and camera or phone software holding the USB connection is a known blocker
Restart the computer if the camera still is not seen - this clears a stuck USB driver state more reliably than repeated plugging
Reopen the updater, then connect the camera with it switched on, and watch for USB Mode on the camera screen before clicking anything
If a second computer is available, try the same steps there. Detection working on one machine and not the other tells you the problem lives in the first computer, not in the camera
🔴 Do not keep clicking Next on a camera the updater cannot see. Nothing is written to the camera before detection, so this state is completely safe - but forcing tools, random drivers or registry fixes from forums is how a safe state becomes a messy one. Work the ladder above in order.

The camera shows USB Mode but the updater still waits. What now
That combination usually means the computer side is stuck - close everything, restart the computer, connect directly to a different USB port with the supplied cable, and start the updater before connecting the camera. Trying a second computer cleanly separates a camera problem from a computer problem.
Can I update with any USB-C cable I have at home
For charging, yes - for the firmware update, Sony guarantees functionality only with the cable supplied with the camera. Many household cables are charge-only. If detection fails, the cable is the second thing to change, right after the USB mode.
Is it safe that the updater never found my camera
Yes. Detection happens before anything is written. A camera that was never detected has not been changed at all - it is in exactly the state it was before you started, and you can use it normally and retry whenever you like.
