WSA Ended Explained

Windows Subsystem for Android Not Working on Windows 11 What Changed

Your Android apps disappeared, the Amazon Appstore will not open, or the Store page for WSA is simply gone. Nothing is wrong with your PC. Microsoft shut the whole feature down, and this page explains the full story.

If you followed the video above or any older tutorial, you did nothing wrong. The Windows Subsystem for Android was officially retired by Microsoft. Support ended on March 5, 2025, exactly one year after the shutdown was announced, and the Amazon Appstore that supplied its apps closed with it. That single decision explains every symptom users report today: the missing Store listing, apps that no longer update, and guides whose first step cannot be completed. Below is precisely what changed, what still runs on old installs, and what you should do next instead of hunting for patched copies of a dead system.

Microsoft Support Notice - Windows Subsystem for Android
Microsoft ended support for Windows Subsystem for Android on March 5, 2025
The Amazon Appstore on Windows was discontinued on the same date
New installs from the Microsoft Store are no longer available
Previously installed Android apps are no longer supported

The official position in short. If any website tells you WSA is still a supported Windows 11 feature in 2026, that page is out of date.

1

What Exactly Microsoft Ended in March 2025

The shutdown was total, not partial. Understanding the pieces helps you stop chasing fixes that cannot exist.

  1. The Microsoft Store listing was removed, so new users cannot install WSA at all
  2. The Amazon Appstore on Windows shut down, which was the only official source of WSA apps
  3. Security updates and bug fixes stopped, so an old install stays frozen exactly as it was
  4. Developer support ended, meaning app makers no longer test or fix their apps for WSA

Microsoft's stated reason was low adoption. The feature also never officially reached many countries, and it never had the real Google Play Store, which kept its app library small from the start.

If WSA Is Still Installed on Your PC

Some PCs that installed WSA before the deadline still have it, and installed apps may still open today. Treat that as borrowed time, not a setup worth protecting.

  1. Export or note anything important stored inside Android apps, like files in the shared folders
  2. Do not sign in to banking or payment apps inside WSA, because the system no longer receives security patches
  3. Do not uninstall it expecting to reinstall later, because the Store will not offer it again
  4. Plan your move to an emulator or Google Play Games using the other guides on this page series
3

Why You Should Skip Unofficial WSA Packages

Search results now offer repacked WSA downloads and community builds that promise the Play Store inside WSA. Be clear about what these are: modified system files from strangers, installed with administrator rights, deep inside your Windows.

  1. They receive no security updates from Microsoft or Google
  2. Any Windows feature update can break them without warning
  3. Google services inside them sit in a grey area of Google's licensing
  4. A tampered package can carry malware with full access to your files

Advanced users who fully understand these trade-offs sometimes experiment anyway. For a normal PC that holds your accounts, photos and work, the safe answer is no.

What to Use Instead Starting Today

Your replacement depends on what you used WSA for, and each path is covered in detail in this blog series.

  1. Games: install Google's official Google Play Games on PC
  2. Normal apps and APK files: install a full emulator such as BlueStacks or MuMu Player
  3. Banking and strict apps: stream them from your real phone with Phone Link
  4. Everyday services: check the Microsoft Store or the web version first, it is lighter than any of the above

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Microsoft really remove WSA from Windows 11?

Yes. Support ended on March 5, 2025. WSA and the Amazon Appstore were removed from the Microsoft Store, and no security updates or fixes are released anymore.

My installed Android apps still open. Should I keep using them?

Casual apps may keep opening for a while, but they are unsupported and unpatched. Avoid banking, payment and personal account apps inside WSA, and move your important apps to an emulator or Phone Link.

Can I reinstall WSA from a downloaded package?

Old packages and community builds exist, but they are unofficial, unpatched and can break with any Windows update. They are not recommended for a PC you depend on.
