When a Fresh Ventoy Install Is Better Than an Update
Update is fast and safe, so when is the nuclear option - a full fresh install that formats everything - actually the correct decision? These are the five honest cases, and the safe order for doing it.

Fresh installs have a certain appeal: clean, new, everything in its place. Resist it as a habit. On a healthy Ventoy drive, a rebuild buys you exactly the same Ventoy that a ten-second update does - at the price of copying gigabytes back and forth. But there are real situations where Update is the wrong tool and rebuilding is the honest fix. Here is how to tell them apart.
Update or fresh install - the decision table
Drive boots, version is just oldUPDATE
Update fails the same way every timeFRESH INSTALL
Menu never appears on any PCFRESH INSTALL
You want MBR to GPT, or Secure Boot option changedFRESH INSTALL
Data partition itself reports file errorsFRESH INSTALL
Everything works - you just like things tidyUPDATE - DO NOT REBUILD
Fresh install is a repair tool, not a maintenance habit - the signs on the left earn it, impatience does not
1
The Default Answer Is Update
A fresh install is the heavy tool: it repartitions and formats the entire drive, so afterwards you copy every ISO back and re-apply your configuration. For a healthy drive that is pure cost with no benefit - the resulting Ventoy is byte-for-byte the same product an update gives you. So earn the fresh install with evidence. The cases below are the legitimate ones; anything not on this list is an Update job.
2
When Fresh Install Genuinely Wins
The boot partition is corrupted. The Ventoy menu does not appear on any PC, and Update runs but the drive still will not boot. The boot side needs rebuilding, not refreshing
Update fails identically, repeatedly. You have tried the calm recovery order - clean retry, another port, another PC - and it stops at the same point. Rebuilding removes whatever half-written state it keeps tripping over
You are changing install-time options. Ventoy's partition style (MBR or GPT) and its Secure Boot support option are chosen with the Option menu at Install time. Changing them is a rebuild by definition - Update cannot do it
The data partition is damaged. File errors, ISOs that corrupt on copy, a filesystem check that finds problems - formatting as part of a fresh install is then a feature, not a cost
The drive is ancient. A Ventoy installation from the very early 1.0.x era that misbehaves in small ways is honestly quicker to rebuild than to debug
3
Do It in the Safe Order
Copy everything off first: all ISOs, and the ventoy folder with your theme and configuration
Verify the copies open on the PC - a backup you have not checked is a hope, not a backup
Run Ventoy2Disk, set any Option menu choices (partition style, Secure Boot support) before installing, then click Install and confirm the format warning
Copy the files back, restore the ventoy folder, and boot-test the drive with one ISO
Redo the Secure Boot enrolment on your PCs if this drive meets them - new boot files, new introduction, exactly as the Secure Boot guide in this series describes
The honesty line: a fresh install fixes structure, not hardware. If the drive was failing - dropping connections, corrupting files - rebuilding Ventoy on it only hides the warning signs for a while. Replace the drive, and keep a second ready Ventoy drive so a rebuild never happens under pressure at someone's dead PC.

Is a fresh install cleaner or better than updating Ventoy?
No - for a healthy drive both produce the same current Ventoy. Update gets there in seconds without touching your files; a fresh install adds a full format and recopying every ISO for zero extra benefit. Fresh install is a repair for damaged drives, not an upgrade path.
Can I change partition style or the Secure Boot option with an update?
No. Partition style (MBR or GPT) and the Secure Boot support option are chosen in the Option menu at Install time. Changing either one means backing up your files, doing a fresh install with the new options, and copying everything back.
My Ventoy drive boots on some PCs but not others. Fresh install?
Not first. Booting on some machines proves the drive basically works - the non-booting PCs usually point to their own firmware settings or Secure Boot enrolment. Try the calm checks on those machines first; reserve the fresh install for a drive that boots nowhere or fails updates repeatedly.
