🧠 Crash Diagnosis Order

PC Keeps Crashing but RAM Passes Every Test The Other Suspects in Order

Four clean passes. The RAM is cleared. The crashes continue. Good — a cleared suspect is progress. Here is who to question next, and in what order.

A full MemTest86 pass at stock settings is strong evidence: the memory is very likely innocent. Random crashes have other authors, and chasing them in a random order burns weeks. This guide works the list the way a workshop does — cheapest test and most common cause first: storage health, temperatures, the power supply, then software and drivers. One discipline runs through all of it: change one thing at a time, and keep a written crash log.

Suspect list after RAM is cleared (example order)
1. Drive health (SMART, surface)Test first COMMON
2. Temperatures under loadTest second COMMON
3. Power supply under loadSwap test OFTEN MISSED
4. Drivers and Windows filesAnalyse dumps
5. GPU, CPU, motherboardLast RARE
The workshop order. Each line is cheaper or more likely than the one below it.

Suspect 1 — The Drive

A failing HDD or SSD produces crashes that look exactly like bad RAM, because corrupted data gets loaded into memory and executed.

  1. Read the drive's SMART health — any pending or reallocated sectors is a warning, not a detail
  2. Run a full surface scan. A drive that cannot read its own surface cannot run a stable Windows
  3. Check the Windows System log for disk and controller errors around the crash times
  4. A drive failing any of these is replaced, not repaired — and cloned only if the data matters and the drive still reads
2

Suspect 2 — Heat

  1. Watch CPU and GPU temperatures under real load, not idling on the desktop
  2. Crashes that arrive after 20 to 40 minutes of gaming or rendering, and never in the first minutes, are the heat signature
  3. Clean dust from heatsinks and fans; check that every fan actually spins
  4. Old desktops often need fresh thermal paste. If temperatures fall and the crashes stop, you have your answer
3

Suspect 3 — The Power Supply

The most under-tested part in the PC. An ageing PSU delivers clean power at idle and droops under load — precisely when you game or render.

  1. Clues: crashes only under combined CPU plus GPU load, instant restarts with no blue screen, USB devices dropping out
  2. There is no honest software test for this. The diagnosis is a swap test — a known-good PSU of adequate wattage for a few days
  3. Never open a PSU yourself. Its capacitors can hold a dangerous charge
4

Suspect 4 — Drivers and Windows

Only now, with hardware mostly cleared, read the crash evidence itself:

  1. Look at the minidump files — if the same driver name appears again and again, that driver is your suspect, not RAM
  2. Run sfc /scannow from an admin terminal to check Windows system files
  3. Roll back any driver updated just before the crashes began
  4. A clean Windows install on a spare drive is the final software test — if crashes survive it, the cause is hardware below
5

Keep a Crash Log — and the Honest Caveat

Write down every crash: date, time, what you were doing, blue screen or instant restart. Patterns are invisible without notes and obvious with them — "only in one game", "only after an hour", "only since Tuesday's update" are each a diagnosis half-made.

And the caveat, honestly: a MemTest86 pass makes RAM unlikely, not impossible. A rare stick fails only when hot and fully loaded in ways a test can miss. If every suspect above clears and the crashes remain, one more overnight RAM run — inside the warm, closed case — is a fair final check before suspecting the CPU or motherboard.

🟡 Change one thing at a time. Replace the PSU, reseat the RAM and update three drivers in one evening, and if the crashes stop you will never know why — which means you will meet this fault again, unprepared.

❓ Common Questions (FAQ)

Should I run the RAM test again just in case?

One proper 4-pass run at stock is enough to move RAM down the list. Re-testing the same way gives the same answer. Save the repeated run for the very end of the diagnosis, as an overnight hot-case check, only if everything else clears.

The crashes happen in only one game. Is it still hardware?

Usually not the RAM, drive or PSU — a single program crashing points at that program, its settings, or the graphics driver. Update or reinstall the graphics driver first, and check whether other heavy programs run for hours without trouble.

My PC restarts instantly with no blue screen at all. Where do I start?

That shape points first at power and heat, not memory. Check temperatures under load, then swap-test the power supply. A memory fault almost always leaves a blue screen or a dump file behind; a power cut leaves nothing.
