🔎 Discovery Services Fix

PC Not Showing in the Network Folder Start the Discovery Services

The Network folder is empty, yet the shared folder opens the moment you type its address. Nothing is wrong with your sharing — the services that let PCs announce themselves have stopped.

This page fixes one precise symptom: browsing fails, direct access works. If typing the path opens the folder, stop investigating the folder — your permissions, passwords and firewall are already proven good by that single fact. What is broken is the announcement system that fills the Network window: a handful of Windows services most people never see. Starting them takes five minutes; understanding them saves you from ever reinstalling Windows over a cosmetic problem.

1

What Discovery Actually Does

When you open Network in File Explorer, Windows does not scan your street asking who is there. It listens to announcements. Each PC publishes itself using the Function Discovery services and listens for others doing the same. If those services are stopped on a PC, that PC becomes invisible in the Network view — and may also see an empty view itself — even though its folders still open perfectly when you type the path.

That split is the diagnostic key to this whole page: typing the address works, browsing does not means sharing is healthy and discovery is the broken layer. Do not touch permissions or passwords for a browsing problem.

2

The Four Services That Matter

Press Windows + R, type services.msc and check these four on the PC that should be visible — and on yours if your view is empty:

Function Discovery Provider Host and Function Discovery Resource Publication — the pair that finds other devices and publishes this one. SSDP Discovery and UPnP Device Host — support discovery of networked devices more broadly. The Function Discovery pair does the heavy lifting for PC-to-PC browsing.

3

Start Them — and Set Them to Start Themselves

Right-click each stopped service → Properties. Set Startup type to Automatic for Function Discovery Provider Host and to Automatic (or Manual with trigger start, if that is its current setting) for Function Discovery Resource Publication, click Start, then OK. Repeat for SSDP Discovery and UPnP Device Host if they are stopped.

Starting without changing the startup type is a fix that evaporates at the next restart — the services were set to Manual or got disabled, and they will be stopped again tomorrow. Setting the startup type is the actual repair; pressing Start is just its first test. After all four run, close and reopen the Network view and give it a full minute — discovery is a conversation, not a light switch, and the list fills gradually.

4

Still Empty? Check the Layers Around the Services

Discovery needs three agreements: the services running, Network discovery switched on in advanced sharing settings for the Private profile, and the network actually being Private. Any one missing produces the same empty window, which is why this problem feels random. Check them in that order.

One more honest possibility: some routers and mesh systems isolate wireless clients from each other or from wired devices ('client isolation' / 'AP isolation'), especially on guest networks. If every PC's services and settings are correct and the view is still empty, test with both PCs wired, or both on the main SSID — if they appear, the router was silently keeping them apart, and no Windows setting was ever at fault.

5

Do Not Confuse Invisible With Broken ⭐

Remember what this fix is and is not. The discovery services control the phone book, not the phone line. If typing \\192.168.1.50\Share opens your folder, your sharing works — full stop — and this page is about convenience, not repair. Many small offices run for years with an empty Network view and mapped drives doing the real work. Fix discovery if browsing matters to you; never let anyone reinstall Windows over a phone book.

⚠️ A note on advice you will find elsewhere: some guides fix the empty Network view by enabling SMB1. That is curing a phone-book problem by installing a protocol with known, exploited security holes — the full story is on the SMB1 page in this series. The services on this page are the correct fix.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

The services start, then stop again after a restart. Why?

Because the startup type was left on Manual or Disabled. Open each service's Properties and set Startup type to Automatic, then Start it. If it still reverts, check whether a third-party 'optimizer' or a company policy is resetting services — both do this quietly.

My PC sees others but nobody sees mine. Which services?

The publishing half: Function Discovery Resource Publication on your PC announces you to the network. Make sure it is running and set to start automatically, and that Network discovery is on for the Private profile.

Is an empty Network folder a security risk or a virus sign?

By itself, no. It is a settings-and-services state, extremely common after updates, new routers and 'PC cleaner' tools. Judge it by the split test: if direct paths work, sharing is healthy and only browsing is affected.
