Fix Download Station Tasks Stuck on Waiting or Error

A stuck download feels like a broken NAS. Usually it is one of four things — and the most common one is not your NAS at all.

Every download station owner meets the frozen task: stuck on Waiting, alive but at zero speed, or flatly marked Error. Randomly changing settings makes it worse. Work this page top to bottom instead — it starts with reading the status properly, tells the honest truth about sources, and only then touches the NAS itself.

👆 Two stuck tasks, two different homes for the fault — read the status first (values are examples)
1

Read the Status Before Touching Anything

Download Station tells you more than people notice. Look at the task's status first:

  1. Waiting — often innocent: the schedule window has not opened, the queue is full, or the task is paused. Check those before anything else
  2. Downloading at 0 speed — the task is alive but nothing is arriving. That is a source problem, covered next
  3. Error — the task tried and failed: a broken link, a full disk, or a folder it cannot write to
2

The Honest Truth About Slow and Stuck Sources

Here is the part download guides usually skip: Download Station cannot make a source faster than the source is.

  1. For a direct link: if the sending server is slow, overloaded or the link has expired, the task crawls or dies — no setting on your NAS changes that
  2. For torrent tasks: speed comes from other people sharing the file. A torrent with no active seeders will sit at zero forever, on any software, on any machine
  3. The test that separates your NAS from the source: try the same link in a browser. Slow there too means the source — case closed
3

Check the Three NAS-Side Causes

When the source is fine, the fault is usually one of these three:

  1. Disk full — a full destination volume stops every task. Check storage in DSM and free space
  2. Folder permission — if the destination folder's permissions changed, tasks fail with an error. Re-check the folder Download Station is set to use
  3. Stuck package — occasionally the service itself wedges. In Package Center, stop Download Station and run it again; unfinished tasks resume
4

Re-Add the Task as the Last Resort

If one task stays cursed while others fly, delete that task (task only — keep any partial data decision deliberate) and add it again fresh from the original link or file. A surprising number of "broken" downloads are one corrupted task entry. And if a freshly added task from a known-good source works instantly, you have your answer: the NAS was never the problem.

⚖️ The standing rule: One rule runs through every page of this set: download only content you have the right to download — your own files, free and legal releases, and media you own or are licensed to use. The station is just a tool; what you point it at is your responsibility.

❓ Common Questions (FAQ)

Why is my torrent task stuck at zero speed forever?

Because nobody is sending. Torrent speed comes from other peers sharing that file; if there are no active seeders, the task waits indefinitely on any software. The fix is a better source for content you have the right to download, not a NAS setting.

A task says Error but the link works in my browser. Why?

Then look at the NAS side: a full destination disk, a changed folder permission, or a wedged package are the usual three. Freeing space and restarting Download Station from Package Center resolves most of these.

Does restarting Download Station lose my progress?

No. Stopping and running the package again keeps your tasks and their progress. Unfinished downloads resume; they do not restart from zero.
