Access Office Files From Home Without Remote Desktop
Full remote desktop is overkill when all you need is one folder. With the office PC on Tailscale, its shared folders open from home exactly like a drive on your own desk.

Remote Desktop gives you the office computer's whole screen. But half the time, the actual need is smaller — open the shared folder, take the file, work on it. Because Tailscale puts your home PC and the office PC on one private network, ordinary Windows file sharing works across it unchanged. The office folder behaves like it is on your own LAN — with no port forwarding, no FTP server, and no files parked on a stranger's cloud.

☝️ The office share sits in Explorer like a local drive — the only difference is the road it travels is private and encrypted
1
Share Only the Right Folders on the Office PC
On the office PC, right-click the folder to share, open Properties, Sharing, Advanced Sharing, and share it with a clear name like OfficeData
Share specific folders, never the whole drive. The documents folder the team needs — yes. The entire C drive — never
Use the Permissions button to give each person only what their work needs — read-only for most people, read and write only where editing is truly part of the job
Make sure the office PC's Windows account has a real password. Windows will ask for it from home, and that password is the lock on the files
2
Put Both PCs on Tailscale and Confirm the Path
Install Tailscale on the office PC and the home PC, signed in to the same account, as shown in the video
Note the office PC's 100.x Tailscale address
From home, test the road before the folder — run ping 100.84.12.37 using your office PC's real address. Replies mean the tunnel is up
If the ping fails, fix the connection first (both devices online in the Tailscale list), because no sharing setting can work over a dead path
3
Open the Share and Map It as a Drive
On the home PC, press Windows + R and type the share path in the form \\100.84.12.37\OfficeData — the office PC's Tailscale address, then the share name
Sign in with the office PC's Windows username and password when asked. Tick remember only on a machine that is yours alone
To keep it permanently, right-click This PC, choose Map network drive, pick a letter like Z:, enter the same path, and tick Reconnect at sign-in
The folder now opens like a local drive every day — double-click and work

Know the Honest Difference From Remote Desktop
With file access, the file travels to your home PC and opens there. A large file is limited by both connections — a 2 GB video or database will crawl on a slow link
Files that live inside an application — Tally data above all — must not be opened as loose files over a share. Use Tally's own server mode or take the full desktop instead
With Remote Desktop, only the screen travels and the file never leaves the office — better for heavy files and for data that should not exist on a home laptop
Simple rule — documents and spreadsheets, use the share. Application data and big files, use the desktop
5
Keep the Sharing Locked Down ⭐
Turn off any old-style guest or password-less sharing on the office PC. Every access should be a named person with a password
The share is reachable only through Tailscale — never be tempted to forward the Windows sharing ports (445) on the router. Exposed SMB on the internet is an old and serious attack route
When someone leaves the team, remove their device from the Tailscale console and change the office PC's account password. Both locks, same day
Keep office backups independent of this setup — a home user with write access can delete a file, so the office PC needs its own scheduled backup regardless
⚠️ One line that protects everything in this guide: Windows file sharing is safe here only because it rides inside the private Tailscale network. The moment sharing ports are opened on the router instead, the same folders face the entire internet. Private road, or no road.
🎥 Watch the Private Network Setup in the Full Video
The video builds the Tailscale connection this file access stands on — office to home, no static IP, no open ports.
Why does the share open slowly the first time each day?
Two normal reasons. The two PCs may begin through a relayed connection before settling into a direct one, and the office PC may need a moment to wake its disk. If it is slow all day rather than only at first, the bottleneck is usually the office connection's upload speed — the home user can never pull a file faster than the office can send it.
Can I open the office share on my phone too?
Yes, with limits. Install Tailscale on the phone, then use a file manager app that supports Windows network shares (SMB) and connect to the same 100.x address and share name. It is handy for viewing a document or PDF in an emergency. Serious editing belongs on a computer.
Is this safer than putting office files on a consumer cloud drive?
It removes a whole category of risk — the files are not stored on a third-party service, and access is limited to your own signed-in devices. But it adds one responsibility — the office PC becomes the single home of the data, so its backup and physical security are now your job. Offices with an owner who manages that well often prefer it; offices that will not, should use a proper business cloud with the same seriousness.
