Ventoy breaks the usual rule. With Rufus the partition style is a decision per ISO; with Ventoy you choose once when you install it — then spend years just dropping ISO files onto the stick. So the question deserves one careful answer, given once.
Ventoy installs its own bootloader on the stick and shows you a menu of every ISO you copy onto it — Windows, Linux, WinPE tools, all from one drive. Hidden in the installer Option menu is a Partition Style choice: MBR or GPT for the stick itself. The default is MBR, and it is the default for solid reasons. This page explains what the choice changes in Ventoy, why MBR wins for most people, and the two specific situations where GPT genuinely earns its place.
👆 Example installer state. The style is chosen here, at Ventoy install time — not per ISO, and not later.
The partition style here belongs to the stick's own layout — how Ventoy's boot partition and your big data partition (where the ISOs live) are recorded. It decides which firmware can start Ventoy itself. After Ventoy starts, every ISO boots through Ventoy's own machinery, which is why one stick happily serves Windows 11, Ubuntu and a WinPE toolkit back to back. Choose the style that gets Ventoy started on your machines; the ISOs take care of themselves.
If your stick must boot "anything, anywhere", the default is not laziness — it is the engineering answer.
Notice what is not on this list: speed, ISO size, or "newer is better". A GPT Ventoy stick will refuse pure-BIOS machines entirely, so choosing it for a mixed world trades real compatibility for tidiness.
People often switch Ventoy to GPT hoping it fixes Secure Boot prompts. It does not. Ventoy's Secure Boot behaviour is controlled by its own Secure Boot Support option at install time; on a Secure-Boot machine the first boot may ask you to enrol a key (a one-time on-screen step Ventoy guides you through), or you disable Secure Boot for the session. That is true in either partition style. Decide style by firmware reach; decide Secure Boot by that enrolment step — two separate switches for two separate problems.
The style cannot be flipped in place. Changing it means running the Ventoy installer again with Install (not Update), and Install reformats the stick — every ISO on it is erased. So: copy your ISO collection to a folder on your PC first, reinstall Ventoy in the new style, copy the ISOs back. Plan it as a ten-minute maintenance job, not a mid-install rescue at a customer's desk.
The video compares the MBR and GPT choice across both Rufus and Ventoy — seeing the Ventoy Option menu on screen settles where this setting lives.
▶️ Watch Full VideoYes. Ventoy boots the Windows ISO, and setup then installs Windows in UEFI mode onto the PC disk as GPT, completely independently of the stick style. The stick only has to start — what setup does with the internal disk is its own decision.
No setting makes that PC read a GPT stick; the firmware is the wall. Use a second, MBR-style stick (Ventoy or Rufus) for legacy machines. Most technicians carry both and label them — it ends this problem permanently.
No. The menu lists whatever ISO, IMG or WIM files you copy to the data partition, in either style. Style decides which PCs can start Ventoy; the file collection is identical either way.
