Most Edge complaints are not really “Edge exists”. They are “Edge keeps opening things, grabbing PDFs and running when I never launched it”. Every one of those behaviours has a switch. Flip them and Edge becomes a quiet spare browser you forget about - the safest outcome on this whole site.
Removal is surgery. This page is the diet and exercise version - no tools, no risk, nothing to undo badly, and it survives every Windows update because there is nothing for the update to fight. Work through the five switches in order. At the end, Edge will still be installed (that part is Microsoft's decision, not yours), but it will stop opening your links, stop eating your PDFs, stop pre-loading itself at boot and stop asking for attention.
👆 Found at edge://settings/system - these two toggles are the whole “Edge is always running” mystery, and both are yours to switch off.
A half-done default change is why links still open Edge. Do it in full:
HTTP, HTTPS, .htm and .html all point to your browser.pdf and set that too - PDFs are the item Edge most often keepsOpen Edge one last time, deliberately. Go to edge://settings/system. Turn off Startup boost - that is the feature that loads Edge processes at sign-in “to help it open faster”. Turn off Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed. Close Edge, restart the PC, and check Task Manager: the forest of msedge.exe processes is gone. Nothing about Windows depends on this pre-loading; it was purely Edge helping itself.
While you are in Edge settings, finish the peace treaty. In Privacy, search and services, turn off the shopping assistant and search suggestions if they annoy you. In Sidebar settings, hide the sidebar and its Copilot button. In Appearance, remove buttons you never use. And under Notifications in Windows Settings, you can mute Edge notifications entirely. Each is a small thing; together they are the difference between a browser that pesters and one that waits quietly.
Even perfectly tamed, a few Microsoft-owned doors still open Edge on non-European PCs: the Widgets board, web results in Start menu search, and some “open in browser” links inside Microsoft apps. Microsoft routes its own surfaces through its own browser by policy, and no default setting overrides that everywhere. If those specific doors are your main complaint, taming will not fully satisfy you - that is the honest case for removal, and for the Europe route where the law already fixed it.
Two tempting moves cause real harm. Do not disable the Edge update service while Edge is still installed - an unpatched browser engine on your PC is a genuine security risk, since WebView2 apps use the same technology. And do not delete the Edge program folder by hand; a half-deleted component is worse than a whole quiet one, and Windows servicing will fight you. Taming means switches, not surgery.

▶️ Watch Full VideoTwo Edge features do that: Startup boost, which preloads Edge at sign-in, and background mode, which keeps extensions and apps running after you close the window. Open edge://settings/system and turn both off, then restart. The processes will stay gone.
PDF is a separate file association that the Set default button sometimes leaves behind. Go to Settings - Apps - Default apps, search for .pdf in the file type box at the top, and assign it to your browser or a dedicated PDF reader.
No. Even if you never open it, Edge technology sits inside Windows through WebView2, and unpatched browser engines are a real security risk. Let it update quietly - updates are small, and a patched spare browser is far safer than a frozen old one.
