Upgrade to Windows 11 Free From Windows 10 Who Pays Nothing and How

Still free - and still free today. If your Windows 10 is genuinely licensed and your PC meets the requirements, upgrading to Windows 11 costs zero rupees. This page separates the people who truly pay nothing from the people no upgrade can help, and walks both official routes.

The question sounds too simple, which is why the internet fills it with confusion and scams: is upgrading to Windows 11 actually free? Yes - with one honest condition that decides everything. The upgrade itself has no price tag. What it cannot do is manufacture a licence. Read the first section carefully; it tells you in one minute which side of the line your PC stands on.

The Honest Answer First - Free Means Free, With One Condition

Let us settle the question this page exists for. The upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 costs nothing. Microsoft has never charged for it, and the free upgrade path for eligible PCs is still open today. There is no last date you have missed and no payment screen hiding at the end.

But free has one condition, and it is the condition everything else hangs on: your Windows 10 must be genuinely licensed and activated. The upgrade does not sell you a licence and it does not forgive a missing one. It carries your existing licence forward to Windows 11. Licensed in, licensed out. Unlicensed in, unlicensed out. If that one line describes your PC, the rest of this page is a simple, safe walkthrough.

Check the Two Things That Decide Everything

Before touching any upgrade button, confirm both conditions. Each takes under a minute:

  1. Is Windows 10 activated? Open Settings - System - Activation. It should say Windows is activated, ideally with a digital licence. Or open Command Prompt and run slmgr /xpr - a genuine permanent activation shows a clear activated message.
  2. Does the hardware qualify? Windows 11 asks for a supported 64-bit processor, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage, UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability and a TPM 2.0 chip. The free PC Health Check app from Microsoft tests all of it and gives a straight yes or no.
  3. Run winver as well and note your Windows 10 version. Being on the latest Windows 10 (version 22H2) keeps the upgrade offer and the upgrade itself smooth.
3

Route One - Upgrade Through Windows Update

This is the route the video follows, and it is the easiest because Windows does the compatibility work for you:

  1. Back up your important files to an external drive or cloud storage. Upgrades are designed to keep everything, but a backup is the seatbelt you wear anyway.
  2. Open Settings - Update and Security - Windows Update and click Check for updates.
  3. On an eligible PC a banner appears saying the upgrade to Windows 11 is ready. Click Download and install.
  4. The download is several GB, so give it time and a stable connection. Keep a laptop plugged into power for the whole process.
  5. When prompted, restart. The PC restarts a few times and lands on the Windows 11 desktop with your apps, files and settings carried over.
4

Route Two - The Installation Assistant When the Offer Is Missing

No banner in Windows Update does not automatically mean no upgrade. Microsoft's free Windows 11 Installation Assistant, downloaded from Microsoft's own Windows 11 download page, runs the same eligibility check and starts the same upgrade manually. It is the standard second route - not a trick and not a bypass. If the Assistant also refuses, it will name the requirement your PC misses, and that message is the truth to act on. Do not download upgrade tools from random sites; the genuine tools live only on microsoft.com.

5

What the Upgrade Keeps - and What It Costs in Time

An in-place upgrade keeps your installed programs, your files, and most settings. Expect the process to take roughly 30 to 90 minutes depending on your drive and connection, plus a first-boot settling period where Windows finishes indexing and updating in the background. The only real costs are that time, the download size, and about 20 GB of free disk space to work comfortably. Money is not on the list.

6

After the Upgrade - Two Two-Minute Checks

Do not just admire the new taskbar. Verify the two things that matter:

  1. Activation: open Settings - System - Activation. It should read that Windows is activated with a digital licence. If it says not activated, the problem came in with your Windows 10 - the licence page of this series explains exactly why upgrades cannot fix that.
  2. The way back: for the first 10 days, Settings - System - Recovery - Go back returns you to Windows 10 with your files intact, in case an essential app or device misbehaves. After 10 days that door closes, so test your important software early.
The line nobody should cross: any website or person selling a free Windows 11 upgrade, or offering a cheap key that magically activates it, is selling you a problem. The genuine upgrade is free from Microsoft for licensed PCs - and no third party can make an unlicensed PC licensed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Windows 11 upgrade really free, or is there a catch?

It is genuinely free for PCs running an activated, licensed copy of Windows 10 that meet the hardware requirements. Microsoft never put a price on the upgrade itself. The catch, honestly stated, is that free refers to the upgrade - it does not include a licence. If your Windows 10 was never properly licensed, Windows 11 will not be either.

Will upgrading remove the not activated watermark on my PC?

No. This is the most common misunderstanding. An upgrade carries your activation state with it. A Windows 10 that shows the activation watermark produces a Windows 11 that shows the same watermark, because the upgrade copies your licence situation - it never creates a licence. Activation has to be fixed with a genuine licence, separately.

I meet every requirement but Windows Update shows no upgrade offer. Why?

Usually one of three reasons: updates are paused or your Windows 10 is not fully updated to version 22H2, Microsoft has placed a temporary safeguard hold on your hardware combination because of a known issue, or the offer simply has not rolled to your PC yet. Update Windows 10 completely, unpause updates, and if the offer still does not appear, use the free Installation Assistant from Microsoft's website - it performs the same checks and upgrade.
