Should You Delete Temp and Prefetch Files The Honest Answer
Every "speed up your PC" video tells you to delete Temp and Prefetch. One of those genuinely helps. The other is a myth that can briefly make your apps open slower. Here is the truth, from a technician.

🎥 Real cleanup goes deeper than temp files — watch the full Windows 11 debloat in the video
Let us separate fact from folklore. Temp files are leftovers from installers and apps; over months they can grow to many gigabytes and are safe to clear. Prefetch is different — it is Windows' own record of how your apps load, used to open them faster. Deleting prefetch does not speed anything up; Windows simply rebuilds it, and until it does, apps can open a little slower. Clean the right things, the right way:
Settings — System — Storage
Local Disk (C:)114 / 119 GB
Installed apps48 GB
Temporary files11.6 GB
Documents22 GB
Other9 GB
A system drive this full slows Windows down on its own — and “Temporary files” is the first place worth reclaiming.
1
Delete User Temp Files (Safe, Worth Doing)
Press Windows + R, type %temp% and press Enter
Press Ctrl + A to select all, then Shift + Delete
Some files will refuse to delete because they are in use right now — click Skip. That is normal and harmless
Repeat once with temp (the Windows temp folder) the same way
2
Use Disk Cleanup for the Heavy Junk
Disk Cleanup for Windows (C:)
☑ Temporary files — 1.8 GB
☑ Recycle Bin — 3.4 GB
☑ Thumbnails — 212 MB
☐ Delivery Optimisation Files — 2.1 GB
Total disk space you gain7.5 GB
Disk Cleanup shows the size of every junk category before you delete anything — nothing here is a guess.
The built-in tool removes the categories most people never find by hand — old update files are usually the biggest.
Press Windows + R, type cleanmgr and choose your C: drive
Click Clean up system files and let it scan again
Tick Windows Update Cleanup, Temporary files, Recycle Bin and Thumbnails, then OK
On many PCs this alone returns several gigabytes
3
Turn On Storage Sense So It Stays Clean
One-time cleaning is a chore; automatic cleaning is a system.
Open Settings → System → Storage
Turn on Storage Sense and open its options
Set it to run every month, and to clear temp files and old Recycle Bin contents automatically
Leave Downloads untouched in these settings unless you are sure — that folder holds your real files
4
Prefetch: Leave It Alone (Here Is Why)
The Prefetch folder (C:\Windows\Prefetch) stores small trace files that help Windows load your frequent apps and the boot process faster. The folder manages itself and stays small by design.
Deleting it gives you back only a few megabytes — there is no storage win
After deletion, Windows rebuilds the traces over the next days — during which apps can open slightly slower, the opposite of the goal
The only honest exception: a technician may clear it while diagnosing a specific startup error. As a "speed tip", it is folklore

Go Beyond Junk Files — the Video Shows the Real Cleanup ⭐ ⭐
Temp files are crumbs. The real weight on a slow PC is the bundled apps, background services and update leftovers. In the full video, the complete Windows 11 26H2 debloat is demonstrated — removing bloatware with the Win11Debloat script and finishing with the system left genuinely lighter, not just dusted.
🔴 When does cleanup actually speed a PC up? Mainly when the C: drive is nearly full — a system drive above ~90% usage slows Windows, updates and apps alike. If you freed 15 GB on a stuffed drive, you will feel it. If you freed 300 MB on a half-empty drive, nothing was ever going to change — look for the real cause instead.

Is it safe to delete everything in the Temp folder?
Yes. Temp contents are disposable working files. Anything Windows or an app is actively using will refuse to delete — just skip those. Nothing in Temp is needed for your documents or installed programs to work.
How often should I clean temp files?
With Storage Sense turned on, you never have to think about it — it cleans monthly on its own. Without it, once every month or two is plenty. Daily temp cleaning, as some videos suggest, gives no extra speed.
A video said deleting Prefetch doubled their speed. True?
No. Prefetch exists specifically to make loading faster, and Microsoft designs it to maintain itself. Any 'speed' people feel after deleting it is the restart and the other steps done at the same time. Freeing disk space and removing bloatware are what actually helped.
