Games Lagging and FPS Down After the Windows 11 Update
Yesterday the game ran smooth. Then Windows updated overnight — and now frames stutter, FPS is lower, and inputs feel heavy. This pattern is common after feature updates, and most causes are fixable in one sitting.

🎥 Background bloat steals game performance too — watch the full debloat in the video
Be systematic, because "FPS dropped after update" has several different real causes: the update may have replaced your graphics driver, reset power and Game Mode settings, turned background recording back on, or simply be still finishing its background work. Change one thing at a time and test the same game scene after each step — that is how technicians isolate it instead of guessing.

VRAM81%
RAM72%
GPU pinned near 100% while FPS sits in the low 30s in a game that used to hold 60 — the classic post-update complaint.
1
Fix the Graphics Driver First — the Usual Suspect
Feature updates frequently swap in a generic or older display driver. Games notice immediately.
Download the latest driver directly from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel's official site for your exact GPU model
Install it and choose the Clean installation option where offered
If FPS dropped with a newer driver instead, roll back: Device Manager → Display adapters → your GPU → Properties → Driver tab → Roll Back Driver
Restart and test the same game, same settings, same area
2
Re-Check Game Mode and Graphics Settings the Update May Have Reset
Open Settings → Gaming → Game Mode and turn it On
Open Settings → System → Display → Graphics, add your game if missing, and set it to High performance
In the same Graphics page, try Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling both ways on older GPUs — on some systems Off is smoother; change it alone and test
Confirm your monitor's refresh rate survived the update: Display → Advanced display — a reset to 60 Hz feels exactly like an FPS drop
3
Kill the Background Thieves: Recording, Overlays, Bloat
Open Settings → Gaming → Captures and turn off background recording ("Record what happened") — it costs frames on modest GPUs
Disable overlays you do not use (Discord, GeForce, Xbox Game Bar) one at a time and test — overlays are frequent stutter sources
Close launchers' extra helpers and browser windows before gaming; on 8 GB RAM systems this alone can end stutter
For the bundled apps Windows reinstalled with the update, use the debloat shown in the video below

Check Power and Temperature While You Play
Task Manager — Performance — GPU
GPU temperature87 °C
Utilisation97%
Driver version32.0.15.6094
Shared GPU memory3.9 / 8.0 GB
At 87 °C many laptops quietly throttle the GPU to protect themselves — the FPS drop is heat, not the game.
Laptop gamers: play plugged in, and set Settings → System → Power & battery → Power mode to Best performance
Watch Task Manager's Performance tab while the game runs — if the GPU or CPU clocks collapse after a few minutes, that is heat, not software: clean the vents and fan
Make sure the game is using the dedicated GPU, not integrated graphics (Fix 2's High performance setting handles this)

Games suffer from everything running beside them. In the full video, the complete Windows 11 26H2 debloat is performed on screen — bundled apps and their background services removed with the Win11Debloat script. A lean Windows will not add 50 FPS, but on a modest PC it removes the stutters that bloat causes.
🔴 About Memory Integrity (VBS): Settings → Privacy & security → Windows Security → Device security → Core isolation. On some PCs this security feature costs a few percent of gaming performance — Microsoft has acknowledged the effect. Turning it off is a security trade-off, not a free trick: only consider it on a dedicated gaming machine, understand what you are disabling, and prefer the driver and settings fixes above first.
🎥 Give Your Games a Lighter Windows
Watch the complete Windows 11 26H2 debloat — fewer background processes fighting your game for resources.
My FPS is fine but the game stutters every few seconds. Different problem?
Usually, yes. Smooth average FPS with regular hitches points at background interruptions — a scan starting, a cloud sync, a dying hard disk loading assets, or thermal throttling. Work through Fix 3 and Fix 4, and watch Task Manager during a stutter to catch the process that spikes.
Should I disable Game Mode? Some videos say so.
On most systems Game Mode helps or does nothing — it stops Windows Update restarts and reduces background activity while you play. A small number of specific games have historically disliked it. Test your game both ways; keep whichever is measurably smoother for you.
The update broke my game completely — it will not even launch.
First reinstall the graphics driver (Fix 1) and verify game files in your launcher. If it still fails and the timing matches the feature update exactly, rolling back is reasonable: Settings → System → Recovery → Go back — available for about 10 days after a feature update.
