Export Your Snapchat Memories Before You Delete Your Account
Maybe you are leaving Snapchat. Maybe the new storage limits — free Memories storage now stops at 5 GB, with paid plans above it — pushed you to the door. Either way, one order of operations protects you: export first, verify second, delete last. Reverse that order and years of photos are gone with no appeal.

Deleting a Snapchat account is easy; undeleting its Memories is impossible. Snapchat's own support position is blunt: deleted Memories cannot be recovered, and Support cannot bring them back. The same wall waits if your Memories sit above the new free storage limit for too long. So whatever your reason for leaving — a closed account, a refused subscription, a simple cleanup — the export is not a chore to squeeze in afterwards. It is the whole job. Everything else is one tap.
Before you delete — the safe checklist
[ ] 1. Move My Eyes Only Snaps back to Memories
[ ] 2. My Data request sent — Memories ON, JSON ON
[ ] 3. ALL ZIP parts downloaded to a computer
[ ] 4. Samples opened and checked (old + new + video)
[ ] 5. Second copy saved (drive or cloud)
[ ] 6. NOW it is safe to delete the accountStep 6 before steps 1–5 = Memories gone forever.
Snapchat Support cannot recover deleted Memories.
👆 The only safe order for leaving Snapchat. The delete button takes seconds; the export is what makes it a decision instead of an accident
1
Why Deleting First Is a One-Way Door
Accounts feel recoverable because so many services offer a grace period or an undo. Memories are different:
Snapchat's servers are designed to erase deleted data, not archive it for regrets
Snapchat Support states plainly that it cannot recover deleted Memories — not with ID proof, not with a subscription, not at all
The data export can only contain what Snapchat still holds. After deletion, there is nothing left to export
The same logic applies to the storage change: if your Memories pass the free 5 GB limit and stay over it beyond the grace Snapchat offers, the excess is at risk. Exporting is the free, permanent answer either way.

The Export Checklist, In Order
Run this list top to bottom — the main guide in this set covers each step in full detail:
My Eyes Only first: move locked Snaps back to regular Memories while you still know the passcode — the export does not include the vault
Backup complete: open Memories and let any pending backup finish on Wi-Fi
Request: on accounts.snapchat.com → My Data → Export your Memories on, JSON on, date range All time, Submit
Download: when the email lands, download every ZIP part the same day — the links expire within days
Verify: unzip, open the oldest and newest Memories and a couple of videos, and keep a second copy of the whole archive
3
Only Now Delete — and What to Expect
With two verified copies on your own storage, closing the account (in the app's settings, or via the accounts portal) is finally safe. A few last honest notes:
Deleting the account ends access to everything in it — friends list, chats, Streaks, the lot. The export preserves your data files, not your social graph
If you might return one day, deactivation instead of full deletion keeps the door open longer — but do the export anyway; storage rules and account rules both change
Your exported archive is now yours to keep forever: organise it with the dates restored, keep two copies, and no platform decision can touch it again

Can I export my Memories after deleting my Snapchat account?
No. The export can only include data Snapchat still holds, and deleted Memories are erased. Snapchat Support cannot recover them. Always export, download and verify before deleting.
Snapchat says my Memories are over the free storage limit. Will I lose them?
Snapchat now limits free Memories storage to 5 GB, with paid plans above that and a grace period for people already over the limit. Downloading the full official export is the free way to keep everything permanently, whatever you decide about the plans.
Does the export save my friends and chats too?
You can include several data categories in a My Data request, such as chat history and account information. But it saves data files — it does not preserve the living account, its friends list or your Streaks if you delete it.
