👋 Leaving Insider Properly

Leave the Windows Insider Program Properly and Stop Getting Preview Builds

Hiding the watermark is cosmetics. Unenrolling is the cure. Here is the built-in exit, channel by channel, with no nasty surprises.

If the preview watermark bothers you because the preview build bothers you, do not hide the text — leave the program. Windows has a proper exit built in, but it behaves differently depending on your channel, and half the confusion online comes from guides that never mention that. This page walks the real process, including the part where Canary and Dev users get a different answer.

Settings — Windows Insider Program (recreated)
Stop getting preview builds
Unenroll this device when the next version of Windows releasesON
Current channelBETA
Builds until the stable release landsPREVIEW
Flipping this switch does not change today's build. It queues your exit: when the next major Windows version releases, this PC moves to the stable build and preview builds stop.
👆 The unenroll switch, recreated. The exact wording varies slightly between builds, but the setting lives in the same place.
1

Open the Insider Page in Settings

  1. Open Settings → Windows Update → Windows Insider Program
  2. Look at the channel shown — Canary, Dev, Beta or Release Preview. Write it down; the next steps depend on it
  3. If this page instead invites you to join the program, the PC is not enrolled — your watermark is an evaluation build left behind, and the exit is a stable install, not this switch
2

Turn On Stop Getting Preview Builds

  1. Expand Stop getting preview builds
  2. Turn on Unenroll this device when the next version of Windows releases
  3. That is the whole action. There is no Apply button and nothing uninstalls today — the device is now queued to leave

From this moment the PC keeps working exactly as before. It simply stops boarding the preview train at the next station: when the next major Windows version ships to the public, this device receives the stable build of it instead of another preview.

What Happens Next Depends on Your Channel

This is the part most guides skip, and it is the part that decides whether waiting works for you:

  1. Beta and Release Preview: the waiting exit works as described. You stay on preview builds of the current version, then graduate to the stable release of the next one — files, apps and settings carried across
  2. Canary and Dev: these channels run builds from a much newer development line that stable Windows never catches up to build-for-build, so the waiting switch is not offered as an exit. Leaving means a clean install of stable Windows — today, with a backup first
  3. In every case, the watermark disappears only when a stable build is actually installed, because the watermark belongs to the preview build itself
4

If the Switch Is Greyed Out

A greyed-out or missing unenroll option usually means the enrollment is not yours to change: the PC is managed by an organisation and the Insider settings are set by policy, or you are signed in without an administrator account. On a work PC, that is the end of your side of the job — report it to whoever manages the machine instead of working around their policy. On your own PC, sign in with the administrator account that enrolled it and the option returns.

5

Finish the Job on the Website (Optional)

Unenrolling the device stops the builds. If you also want to stop the Insider emails and close the account side of things, visit the Windows Insider Program website afterwards and leave the program there too — but do the device first. Leaving the website alone does nothing to a PC that is still enrolled and still flighting new builds every week.

And one honest warning to end with: if you unenroll and then keep the PC on its final preview build forever, that build's expiry date still applies. The point of the queue is the stable build at the end of it — let it install.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Will unenrolling from the Insider Program delete my files or apps?

No. Flipping the Stop getting preview builds switch changes nothing on the PC today. When the next major Windows version releases, the device upgrades to the stable build in place, keeping files, apps and settings — the same as any normal Windows feature update.

How long until the watermark actually disappears after I unenroll?

The watermark belongs to the preview build you are currently running, so it stays until a stable build replaces that build. For Beta and Release Preview devices that happens when the next major Windows version releases and installs. If you need it gone today, the only immediate route is a clean install of stable Windows.

I am on the Dev channel. Can I leave without formatting?

Normally, no. Dev (and Canary) builds belong to a newer development line with build numbers ahead of any stable release, and Windows cannot in-place upgrade to an older build number. Microsoft's documented exit for these channels is a clean install of the stable release. Back up everything first — the install starts the PC over.
