Yesterday Outlook knew everyone. Today it knows nobody. A whole list disappearing feels like data loss - sometimes it is recoverable, sometimes it honestly is not, and the difference depends on your account type and one small file. This page walks the realistic recovery paths in order.
Individual suggestions drop off the list all the time - that is normal housekeeping. The entire AutoComplete list vanishing at once is different, and it has a short list of real causes: a new profile or PC, a damaged cache file, the Empty List button, or an account change. Match your situation to the cause first; recovery only makes sense after that.
The honest answer to "can I get it back" depends on your account type:
Stream_Autocomplete cache file on that one PC. Nothing on the server has a copy. Local damage means local loss, unless the old file still exists.Crashes and repairs often rename or orphan the cache rather than deleting it:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Outlook\RoamCacheStream_Autocomplete_ - sort by date. An older, larger file is very likely your lost listOutlook only reads the cache file whose name matches the current profile. The documented recovery is a careful rename, done with Outlook fully closed:
Stream_Autocomplete file with the correct name for this profileThird-party NK2/cache editor tools can also inspect these files and old .nk2 files from Outlook 2007 and earlier, but for a simple rename recovery they are not needed.
If the list was emptied with the Empty List button, or the file is nowhere on disk, there is no recycle bin for it - be suspicious of any tool promising otherwise. The rebuild is kinder than it sounds: the list re-learns every address you send to, so your daily regulars return within days. Speed it up honestly: send one short "new address book test" mail does not help - only real sending teaches it. What does help is importing nothing and simply working; within a week most users stop noticing. And take the lesson forward: the moving guide below shows the two-minute backup that prevents a repeat.
The video walks through the RoamCache folder live - spotting the orphaned cache file and doing the rename recovery without risking the current list.

Sort that folder by date and look for an older, larger file with the same name prefix - that is very likely your list, and the rename method in this guide restores it.
Yes. For Exchange-based accounts the AutoComplete list is stored in a hidden message inside the mailbox, so it roams between PCs and usually returns after a new profile finishes syncing. The local-file loss story mainly applies to IMAP and POP accounts, where the list exists only on the one computer.
If the Empty Auto-Complete List button was pressed and no old cache file exists anywhere on disk, the data is genuinely gone and no honest tool can recreate it. Tools can read, merge and convert existing cache and NK2 files - that is all. Anyone promising to recover a list from nothing is selling hope, not software.
