🛠️ Failed Download Fixes

Free Download Manager Download Failed Errors and Working Fixes

The entry sits in the list marked failed, and retrying gives the same result in two seconds. A failed download in Free Download Manager almost always has one of four causes — and each one has a specific fix instead of blind retrying.

When FDM marks a download as failed, it is reporting what the server or your system told it — the error is information, not the end of the road. Read which of the four families your error belongs to: expired link, server refusal, disk problem, or a broken local session, then apply its matching fix.

FDM Download List — Failed Entries
driver-pack.zipFAILED — 403 FORBIDDEN
ubuntu-24.04.isoFAILED — NO SPACE
backup-tool.exeLINK EXPIRED

The message next to the file name tells you which fix family to use — read it before retrying.

1

Error 403 or 404 — the Link Has Expired or Moved

This is the most common failure on file-hosting and driver sites.

  1. A 404 means the file is gone from that address; a 403 usually means your link's permission or time window ended
  2. Go back to the source website and generate a fresh download link
  3. Update the download's address in FDM with the new link, or add it fresh and resume against the existing partial file when sizes match
  4. Act quickly — many fresh links expire again within a few hours
2

Access Denied — a Folder Permission Problem

FDM cannot write the file where it was told to save it.

  1. Check the download's save folder — protected locations and removed external drives cause this instantly
  2. Change the save location to a normal folder such as Downloads or a folder on your data drive
  3. If the drive letter changed because a USB drive was replugged, point the download to the corrected path
3

Download Stops Near the End — Disk Space or Antivirus

Failures at 95 to 99 percent have two usual suspects.

  1. Check free space on the target drive — the final file needs its full size plus working room
  2. Your antivirus may have quarantined a partly downloaded file it dislikes; check its protection history before retrying
  3. Only ever whitelist files you obtained from the official source — never disable the antivirus to force a download through
4

Server Disconnects Again and Again

Some servers simply cannot hold long sessions.

  1. Lower the number of connections for that download — aggressive segment counts make weak servers drop you
  2. Use the scheduler to retry the file in quieter hours when the server is less loaded
  3. If the site offers multiple mirrors, switch to a different mirror and resume there
5

When Nothing Works — Clean Restart of the Entry

As the last step, rebuild the download entry without losing what you already have.

  1. Note the exact file name and the folder holding the partial file
  2. Remove only the list entry in FDM, choosing the option that keeps the downloaded file if offered
  3. Add a fresh link for the same file and let FDM detect and continue from the existing partial data where possible
  4. If the partial file itself is corrupt, deleting it and starting clean is faster than fighting repeated failures
⚠️ Do not loop the retry button: ten identical failures mean the cause is still there. Match the error text to its fix family above — one correct fix ends what fifty retries cannot.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Why does FDM fail at 99 percent so often

The last stretch is when the file is assembled and written fully to disk, so low disk space and antivirus scans show up there. Check free space and your antivirus protection history first.

What does error 403 mean in Free Download Manager

The server refused the request — almost always because the download link expired or was single-use. Generate a fresh link from the website and update the download address in FDM.

Will I lose my downloaded progress if I remove a failed entry

Not always. If you keep the partial file and add a fresh link for the identical file, FDM can often continue from it. If the partial file is deleted or the server file changed, the download restarts.
