Free Download Manager Not Catching Browser Downloads Fix

You installed Free Download Manager, but when you click a download link, Chrome quietly downloads the file itself and FDM never wakes up. The chain between browser and app has a broken link — here is how to find it.

FDM catches a download through a three part chain: the FDM app running, the browser ticked inside FDM settings, and the browser extension installed and enabled. If any one part is missing, the browser keeps the file for itself and you see nothing happen. Work through the fixes in order — most people are sorted by Fix 2.

The classic symptom: the browser bar fills up while FDM shows an empty list.

1

Make Sure FDM Is Actually Running

The extension can only hand a download to an app that is alive.

  1. Look for the FDM icon in the system tray near the clock
  2. If it is not there, start Free Download Manager from the Start menu
  3. In Settings, enable the option to start FDM with Windows so this does not repeat
2

Install and Enable the FDM Browser Extension

This is the missing piece in most cases. FDM alone cannot see clicks inside Chrome.

  1. Open your browser store and install the official Free Download Manager extension
  2. Open the extensions page — chrome://extensions in Chrome or Edge — and confirm the extension is switched on
  3. Pin the extension icon so you can see its state while browsing
  4. Fully close and reopen the browser after installing
3

Tick Your Browser Inside FDM Settings

The official FDM support team gives this exact repair when the extension loses connection with the app.

  1. In FDM open Settings and go to Browser Integration
  2. If your browser box is unticked, tick it now
  3. If it is already ticked, untick it, wait five seconds, and tick it again — this re-registers the connection
  4. Restart the browser and test a download
4

Check the File Types FDM Is Allowed to Catch

FDM can be told to ignore some file types, and a small type like a document may be on the skip list.

  1. Open Settings and look at the browser monitoring and file type options
  2. Make sure common types such as ZIP, ISO, EXE, MP4 and PDF are allowed to be caught
  3. Also check the skip list for any site you once told FDM not to monitor, and remove it if needed
5

Reinstall Cleanly If the Chain Still Breaks

If the extension still cannot talk to the app, a clean reinstall rebuilds the connection properly.

  1. Remove the FDM extension from the browser
  2. Uninstall FDM, restart the PC, and install the latest version from freedownloadmanager.org
  3. Redo Fix 2 and Fix 3 in order, then test with a big file from an official site
⚠️ One honest limit: some websites deliver files through special login sessions or one-time buttons that no download manager can catch. For those, copy the file link quickly and add it manually in FDM with the plus button while the link is still fresh.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Why does FDM catch downloads on one site but not another

Some sites use one-time or login-protected download links that extensions cannot intercept. FDM works on direct file links; on protected sites, add the fresh link manually in FDM.

Do I need the extension if I paste links into FDM myself

No. Manual adding works without any extension. The extension is only needed for automatic catching when you click download links in the browser.

The extension says settings are not available for my FDM version, what now

That message means the extension and the desktop app are out of sync. Update FDM to the latest version, re-tick your browser under Settings, Browser Integration, and restart the browser.
