Free Download Manager Torrent and Magnet Downloads Guide
Many people install a separate torrent program without realising Free Download Manager already has a torrent client built in. For legal torrent content — and there is plenty of it — FDM handles magnet links and torrent files in the same window as your regular downloads.

Torrents are simply a way of distributing files, and the technology itself is completely legal. Operating systems like Ubuntu and Linux Mint officially distribute their ISOs through torrents, and so do many open-source projects and game patch servers. FDM's built-in client lets you download that content without installing a second program.

If the rights holder publishes the torrent, downloading it is as legal as the direct download.
1
Add a Magnet Link or Torrent File to FDM
Both entry routes take under a minute.
For a magnet link, copy it from the official download page, then in FDM use the add option and paste the link
For a .torrent file, download the small file first and open it with FDM, or drag it into the FDM window
FDM fetches the file list — on big torrents you can untick items you do not need before starting
Choose the save folder and start the download
2
Control Speed So Torrents Do Not Eat the Whole Line
A torrent with many connections can crowd out everything else on your network.
Use the traffic modes and limits in FDM Settings to cap download and upload speeds while you work
Upload speed matters too — an uncapped upload can make browsing and calls feel slow even when download looks free
At night, raise the limits and let the queue run at full speed under the scheduler
3
Seeding — What It Is and How to Behave
Torrents stay alive because downloaders share pieces back. A little awareness goes a long way.
While downloading, FDM also uploads pieces to others — this is normal and how the system works
Leaving a legal torrent seeding for a while after completion is considered good manners in open-source communities
You can stop or remove a torrent from the list any time; the downloaded files stay on your disk
4
Stay on the Right Side of the Line
This part is simple and not negotiable.
Use torrents for content the owner shares freely — official ISOs, open-source releases, public domain material
Movies, paid software and games from torrent index sites are copyright infringement, and a different tool does not change that
Unofficial torrent bundles are also a classic malware route — official sources protect you twice over
✅ One program less: if your torrent use is the legal kind — ISOs and open-source files — its built-in client genuinely replaces a separate torrent app on most PCs.

Torrent support is one part of the complete FDM picture shown in the video, alongside speed, resume and scheduling.
The technology is legal. Downloading Linux ISOs, open-source software and other content the owner distributes by torrent is completely fine. Downloading copyrighted movies or paid software without permission is not.
Why is my torrent stuck at zero speed in FDM
A torrent needs other online peers sharing that exact file. Old or rare torrents may have nobody online. Official ISO torrents are usually well seeded; also check that your firewall is not blocking FDM.
Can FDM open magnet links directly from the browser
Yes. When magnet links are associated with FDM, clicking one in the browser hands it to FDM. If another program grabs them instead, set FDM as the default for magnet links in its settings or in Windows default apps.
