Resume Broken Download in Free Download Manager Complete Guide

The download was at 82 percent when the power went, the laptop slept, or Windows restarted for an update. In a browser, that file starts again from zero. In Free Download Manager, you can usually pick it up from the exact same byte.

Resume works because FDM saves your file in parts on the disk and remembers exactly which parts are complete. When the connection returns, it asks the server only for the missing parts. There is one condition behind all of this — the server must support resuming — and this guide shows how to check everything step by step.

The partial file is still on the disk. The only question is whether the server allows continuing it.

1

Resume the Download from the FDM List

Do not delete the entry — the entry is what remembers your progress.

  1. Open FDM and find the stopped download in the list
  2. Select it and press the Resume or play button
  3. Watch the progress bar — it should continue from the saved percentage, not restart
  4. If the PC was restarted, just launch FDM first; the list and partial files are saved automatically
2

If Resume Fails, Refresh the Download Link

Many sites give links that expire after a few hours. The file is fine — the address went stale.

  1. Go back to the website and generate a fresh download link for the same file
  2. Copy the new address quickly, before it expires
  3. In FDM, open the download properties and update the address, or add the new link and point it to the same partial file when FDM asks
  4. Resume again — the downloaded parts are reused when the file size and name match
3

Understand When Resume Is Genuinely Impossible

Sometimes the honest answer is that the download must restart, and it is not FDM's fault.

  1. Servers that do not support partial requests force every download to start from the beginning
  2. If the file on the server changed since you started — a new version was uploaded — old parts no longer match
  3. If the partial file was deleted or the download entry was removed, the progress record is gone
4

Protect Big Downloads Before They Break

Two habits make resume problems almost disappear.

  1. For very large files, download to a drive with plenty of free space — a full disk stops downloads mid-way
  2. Use the scheduler to run heavy downloads at night and enable the option to shut down the PC when finished
  3. Keep the laptop on charge during multi-GB downloads so sleep and battery saving cannot kill the session
5

Move a Browser Partial Download — Set Expectations Right

This question comes up in almost every comment section, so here is the straight answer.

  1. A half-downloaded file inside Chrome or Edge generally cannot be imported into FDM or IDM to continue
  2. Browser partial files are in a private temporary format that download managers cannot read
  3. The practical fix is to start the file inside FDM from the beginning — painful once, but every future break becomes resumable
✅ Quick test for any server: start a download in FDM, pause it after a minute, then resume. If it continues from the same percentage, that server supports resume and your big downloads are safe there.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Why does FDM restart my download from zero instead of resuming

Either the server does not support resume, the link expired, or the partial file or list entry was deleted. Refresh the link from the website first — that fixes the majority of cases.

Does resume work after shutting down the PC

Yes. FDM saves the download list and the partial files on disk, so after a restart you can open FDM and resume from the saved percentage.

Can I resume a download that Chrome started

No. Browser partial downloads use a temporary format that FDM cannot read. Start the file inside FDM instead, and from then on it stays resumable.
